Haplogroup I1-L592 / Y19048 Distribution of Haplogroup I
Haplogroup I1 is the second most common haplogroup in western Europe, after R1b.  The larger subclade, I1, has its distribution centered around northern Germany, Denmark, and southern Norway and Sweden, which has caused some to dub it the "Viking" subclade, while the smaller, Haplogroup I2 subclade has its distribution concentrated in southeastern Europe (see map to the right).

The most basic information sought with Y-DNA testing is support for being a member of one's family, that is, for having the same common ancestor in genealogical time.  All of those in the table below have established that fact as they are genetically closely related.  No one has less than a 64/67 match with the family's modal haplotype; and, at 111 markers, no one has less than a 107/111 match with the modal nor less than a 103/111 with any other family member.  We even have one individual who is a 136/136 match with the family modal and none, so far, matches it at less than a 131/136 level.  These are high level matches indicating a near common ancestor for everyone in the table.

Because members of this family are matching one another so closely, we need to find more markers to separate them if we want to identify individual family lines.  In addition to taking the 111 Standard Markers, the palindromic markers are among the most variable, so I would recommend all our members take them.  (They can be ordered from among the "Advanced" tests on your member page.)

The FTDNA version of the STRAUB project web site is also open.  When results return, they will automatically be displayed in the FTDNA results table, whereas it may take me a day to update this page.

UPDATE (30 Jan 2016):  two members of this STRAUB family have been BigY tested and their results analyzed by YFull.  Please see this page for a discussion of the results.  YFull has placed us in Haplogroup I-Y19048, a subclade including the L592 SNP discovered with the Walk-Through-The-Y test.
On 20 Mar 2008 the American STRAUBs discovered a match with a Württemberg STRAUB (#111298).  We've crossed the pond!  Our earliest known common ancestor is Martin STRAUB (1616-1676) of Gemmingen, then Grossgartach, in the Heilbronn District of Wuerttemberg, Germany.  Martin is the paternal grandfather of Johann Pieter STRAUB (1695- ), 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia and ancestor of President Barack OBAMA.  Anyone in the table below who does not descend from Martin must at least descend from some male STRAUB closely related to him — and everyone in the table is cousin to the President. 
Several members of the family have been deep SNP tested, with these combined results: 
M170+ M258+ P19+ P38+ M253+ M307+ P30+ P40+ S62+ thru S66+ S107+ thru S111+
The first set of positive results proves they are Hg I; the second set proves they are Hg I1. The S-series SNPs redundantly prove they are Hg I1.

The first set of negative results redundantly proves they are not Hg I2.  The second set of negative results shows they are not any known subclade of Hg I1. 

One member of the family (#23492 EJJQA) has taken the WTY test , and these are the SNPs found to be positive (i.e., derived):

One of these SNPs is newly discovered:  L592.  This polymorphism involves a nucleotide mutation from T to G at this location.  If you are Haplogroup I1 and your family has not yet tested this SNP, please do so.

Update (27 Jul 2011):  other family members have now taken the L592 test, and they are positive.  Others, outside the family, but still Haplogroup I, are taking the test, and so far, all are negative (see below).  L592 appears to be a private mutation identifying just this family, at least so far, and because it appears to be private, it is not being given a place on the Y-DNA haplotree.  For the time being and to the larger research community, we will remain designated I1 (= I-M253).

I recommend all members of this family join the Haplogroup I1 Project at FTDNA and the Y-DNA-HAPLOGROUP-I mailing list at RootsWeb to be kept up-to-date on research into our haplogroup.

In Panel 5, the header labels in green (MP10) are the ten markers originally available only from EthnoAncestry.  The header labels in pale yellow are the nine markers tested by SMGF, Ancestry, et al.  The labels in paler grey are the "new" markers, first available in Panel 5.  Other than the "new" markers, all the other markers in Panel 5 were formerly available at FTDNA as "a la carte" Advanced markers.

The two kit number table cells highlighted in reddish-brown indicate two brothers; the two kit number cells highlighted in avocado-green indicate a father and son.  These are the two most closely related pairs of individuals in the table, yet one member of each pair differs from the other by one mutation — while there are 5th cousins in the table matching 111/111.  These results are a clear example of why you cannot use genetic distance alone to determine the degree of relatedness between individuals in genealogical time.  It isn't just that it won't help you, it's that it will mislead you — and so badly it shouldn't be used for this purpose, at all. 
Family Finder Matching — open only to those who have been FF tested (and/or  their contacts).
Discussion:
The method I use for analyzing Y-DNA STR test data (described in detail on this page) is through the use of 1) "signature" markers, to define the family and 2) "branching" markers, to identify different lines within the family.  Having now established our unity as a family with signature markers (columns of lavendar cells in the table above), the next step is to distinguish different lines in the family using shared branch markers.  We have been decidedly unlucky in terms of finding branch markers, although I suspect part of the difficulty is that we have made some mistakes in paper genealogy near the base of the tree.  Time will tell…
One branch marker is the value of 25 at DYS481 (orange table cells) uniting two descendants of Adam5 STROUP and a descendant of his brother, Jacob5 STROUP.  The descendant of their brother, Andrew5 STROUP, does not have this mutation.  There is only the most remote statistical probability that the same mutation could happen twice in the sons of one man, leaving us with two possibilities:  one, that Adam and Jacob were identical twins; the other, that we've made a significant error in their paper genealogy.
Marker DYS710 in Panel 5 has a 0.2 "microallele," a partial segment that may or may not be present.  FTDNA software does not currently indicate the presence of the microallele, either on the member's page or the public web site.  So, for now at least, you have to ask FTDNA whether it is present.  Update (2014):  FTDNA does now show the allele for new test subjects, but if you were tested earlier, you still need to ask what your value is.

Detailed SNP Test Results
Three of the above individuals have been deep SNP tested, namely, #26156, #23492, and #24212; and, as expected, they all had the same results:
P19+ M170+ M258+ P30+ P38+ M307+ M253+ M21- M72- M227- P37.2- M26- M161- M223-
The positive SNP tests prove they are I1.  The negative results for M21, M72, and M227 rule out their belonging these subclades of I1, which means, based on the current haplogroup tree, they are root/ancestral I1* or I-M253*.  The remaining negative results rule out their being any form of I2.
#23492 has been ordering advanced Haplogroup I SNPs as they become available:

P40 has long been known to be synonymous with M253.  The ten S-series SNPs have likewise proven to be synonymous with M253.

 So far, L592 is a private SNP for this family (i.e., no one outside the family has tested positive for it).

So far, being Z140+/Z141+ is consistent with being in either the AS5 or AS6 cluster (see Nordtvedt I1 haplotree).
#23492 has taken the WTY test with the result that a new SNP was found:_L592 (see above).

Update (26 Nov 2013):  he is negative for Z2535 and positive for F2642.
Update (19 Jan 2014):  he is negative for F1275.

Others in this family who have now tested L592, with a positive result:
#24212, #26156, #111298, #124348, #N92037.
The key person here is #111298, the STRAUB still living in Germany, who does not descend from Johann Pieter STRAUB, 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia, but from his brother, Antonius.  This result means that all descendants of their father, Hans Adam, can be expected to be positive for this SNP, which means it has become an identifier for this family.

Discussion:
Probably the most unexpected results have been those of descendants of Jacob STROUP I (1722-1804/5) of Lincoln [now Gaston] Co., NC, purported grandson of Matthias STROOP, the 1687 immigrant from Westphalia to Maryland.  They were unexpected because, as you can see above, these descendants are a tight match (66/67 and 67/67) with the descendants of Johann Pieter STRAUB I of Pennsylvania.  These results resurrect and support the assertion by early researchers that Jacob STROUP I of NC is the missing son, Johann Jacob STRAUB, who immigrated from Wuerttemberg to Philadelphia in 1733 with his father, Johann Pieter STRAUB I.
These descendants of Johann Pieter I and Johann Jacob I are a decided non-match with the descendants of Jacob STROUP II (1771-1846) of NC, who are Haplogroup J2.  Being in different haplogroups means these I1 and J2 individuals cannot have shared a common ancestor for thousands of years, which means Jacob STROUP II cannot be a grandson of Jacob STROUP I as formerly believed. 
Results for #130123 support another contention of early researchers, namely, that the John Peter STROUP of Wythe Co., VA, is a member of this family, though he is possibly not connected to it in the way they envisioned.  Two other paper descendants of John Peter have been tested, and each has an NPE in his lineage (see Node Chart for John Peter).
#138214 shares a mutation with the above #130123 (red table cells).  The problem is, either we again have a situation where we have to postulate that the same mutation happened more than once in a few generatons, or there is something wrong with their paper genealogy.  The latter is more probable.
#119218 is a biological STROUP whose ancestor was adopted by a BARNES.  While it appears he has a genetic distance of four from the modal haplotype, it's actually three because any mutation in DYS389i is reflected in DYS389ii, so the differences in those markers represent one mutation event, not two.
#133507 has two additional copies of DYS464 (an additional 12 and 15).  This is a rare condition, with only about 1.5% of people tested having more than four alleles at this location.  FTDNA scores this difference as a Genetic Distance of two, but it's probable that the two additional copies appeared in one mutation event (by duplication of two of the existing alleles).  The testing of cousins could prove whether this condition is the result of one mutation event or two, but it is almost certainly one because, otherwise, this individual is a near match with the family's modal haplotype.
Results for #75122 were unexpected because he is not a match with the other paper descendant of John STRAUB, Sr., of Beaver Township (see Haplogroup I1-Norse-D, #24343).  Because #75122 descends through John Jr., whose paper connection to John Sr. is essentially unassailable, it appears (for that and other reasons) that #24343 is the one with the bad paper connection or, more likely, an NPE in his patrilineal line to John Sr.  For more discussion on the matter, please see John Sr.'s family group sheet. 
#133507 was originally tested at Ancestry-DNA and has now been re-tested at FTDNA.  He is a descendant of Elisha STROUP, whom I have long contended could not be a son of Jacob STROUP II as shown by most sources (all secondary).  My reasoning had been that Jacob II's wife at the time Elisha was born was simply too old to be bearing children.  The DNA test results support this contention because Elisha's descendant is Haplogroup I1 and matches this family, while Jacob STROUP II's descendants are Haplogroup J2.  People in different haplogroups cannot have shared a common ancestor for thousands of years.  I implore everyone considering being tested to do so with FTDNA, from the start; otherwise, you will likely end up having to do what this individual has had to do, that is, having to pay for being tested twice.  If you have any intention of eventually joining this project, it's invariably going to end up being false economy to get tested elsewhere, first.
Another unexpected result is the match with #97358, surnamed BELEW. The match is 67/67 leaving no doubt that he is closely related to the other individuals in this table.  It does appear this individual has an NPE in his lineage, and it's not insignificant that, for decades, the BELEWs lived in close association with the STROUPs of Jefferson Co., MO.
A further unexpected result is the match with #50052, surnamed CRUMP, who apparently has an NPE in his lineage.  Some further testing of cousins is needed to pinpoint the STROUP in his patrilineal line.  His father has been tested (#138239), and he, too, is a STROUP.

Light Magenta Signature markers distinguishing this family from the I1 and AS5 modals.  One of these signature markers has a value that is exceedingly rare.  According to the SMGF database (as of 11 May 2011), only 34 people out of 36,099 people tested (0.094%) are 9 at DYS445.  Within Haplogroup I1, this family is, so far, unique in having a value of 9 at this marker. 
Purple Branch markers uniting two descendants of John Peter STROUP with each other, and possibly linking them to a descendant of Philip6, grandson of the immigant, Johann Jacob I.
Bright Yellow A mutation distinguishing this person from others in the family, a.k.a., a private mutation.
Dull Blue Tests not ordered.
Tentative Connections:
There are several possible interpretations of the mutation from 21 to 20 at DYS570, which is known to be a fast-mutating marker.  One is to assume the mutation happened twice, once in the line from Antonius3 and once in Andrew5, Founder of Freeburg.  Because the descendant of Antonius still lives in Germany, that assumption is the most probable interpretation of this situation.

Having made that assumption, it would then seem that George6, who shares the mutation and whose parents are undocumented, must be a brother of Peter6, which would not be inconsistent with their ages and locations.  It follows, then, that the mutation must have happened in Andrew5, and if it did, the Andrew S. STRAUB of PA, then Marion Co., OH, cannot be a son of Andrew5, as is held by long-standing family tradition among Andrew S.'s descendants.  Because Andrew S. is my ancestor, I'm loathe to let go of that tradition, but I cannot argue with the DNA.  However, this is not the only interpretation.  Indeed, the mutation may have happened three times, and it's not a branching marker, at all.

Arguing against the scenario just posed is that it means Andrew5 had two sons with new mutations.  This situation is not impossible, though it's statistically rare.  When testing 67 markers, you can expect, on average, one mutation roughly every seven generations, which is the reason you see most members of this family with one mutation away from the 67-marker modal — because the tested family members are 10-12 generations distant from our common ancestor, Martin STRAUB.  Mutations are random, however, so some people have no mutations in that number of generations while others have 2 or 3.  Therefore, of the possible interpretations here, this might not be the one.

Hopefully, the pending results from upgrading to 111 markers will tell us, but even if it doesn't, testing will eventually resolve the question, as would a breakthrough in paper genealogy.  Andrew5 had at least 11 children, and the names of only five are known.  Of those five, only Peter6 is identified with certainty.  It is likely that the lines of the descent from Andrew5 STRAUB, Founder of Freeburg, will only be resolved through exhaustive DNA testing.
Based on strong circumstantial evidence, Benjamin STROUP and Andrew S. STROUP are believed to be brothers.  Weaker evidence suggests Moses STROUP may be their brother, too.
A descendant of Silas BELEW is a genetic match with these STROUPs.  In the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., MO, Silas BELEW was listed next to Harmon7 STROUP, who is presumably a grandson of Adam5 (Joh. Jacob I4, Joh. Pieter I3) because the only STROUPs known to have moved early to Jefferson Co., MO, were three sons of Adam5, (viz., Peter6, Henry6, and Andrew6), so while Harmon7 may not be the one responsible for the NPE, whoever was responsible was almost certainly a son or grandson of Adam5.
William Waitsel PRESTWOOD-CRUMP was born in Caldwell Co., NC, where no STROUPs were known to reside; however, William's children were born in Gaston Co., NC, which was inhabited by many genetically matching STROUPs.  These matching STROUPs all descend from Johann Jacob STRAUB, a.k.a., Jacob STROUP I.  We don't know which STROUP was Richard Lexington CRUMP's father, but he must have been one of Jacob's descendants.
Elisha STROUP was born ca. 1811 in NC and married in 1830 in Lincoln Co., NC, part of which became Gaston Co. in 1846.  Any genetically matching STROUP born early in Lincoln/Gaston Co., NC, probably descends fom Jacob STROUP I.
