Samuel STROUP
Hannah HALL
Husband:  Samuel STROUP
Birth:  ca. 1800, PA or NY
Death:  1843-50, Elkhart Co., IN
Father:  George STROUP, Sr.
Mother:  Susanna RIEGEL
Marriage:
Wife:  Hannah HALL
Birth:  1809/10, NY
Death:  1871, York Twp., Elkhart Co., IN
Father:  Abner C. HALL
Mother:  Phoebe LANE
Children:
— born in Mt. Clemens, Clinton Twp., Macomb Co., MI:
1.  Isaac STROUP, b. 1828/9
2.  Henry STROUP, b. ca. 1830
3.  Phoebe Jane STROUP, b. 9 Mar 1833
4.  Caroline STROUP, b. 1834/5

— born in Elkhart Co., IN:
5.  William Martin STROUP, b. 1836/7
6.  Frances "Fanny" STROUP, b. 1841/2
7.  Joseph H. STROUP, b. 1843/4

The location, Mt. Clemens, is given by a descendant of Phoebe Jane's.  There's no reason not to believe this location is correct because the 1830 census shows Samuel to be in Clinton Twp.

Keywords for search engines:  genealogy; USA, US, United States, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania

In the 1880 census, our subjects' children report these birthplaces for their parents:
•  Isaac gives his father's birthplace as PA and his mother's birthplace as NY.
•  Henry gives the birthplace of both parents as OH.
•  Phoebe Jane gives the birthplace of both parents as NY.
•  Joseph gives the birthplace of both parents as PA.
We shouldn't be surprised that the children were confused about their parents' birthplaces considering how the family was split apart after their father's death.  Unfortunately, their confusion leaves us uncertain as to where Samuel was born.

Isaac is Hanna's brother.  Fanny and Joseph, plus the child in the next record living with Hannah's sister, are the only STROUPs in the county who were born in Indiana.

Caroline seems to have managed to get herself enumerated twice, which is not unusual for a child being shuttled about.  I have not found a family connection between STROUP and HALSTEAD.

4e.  1850 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #197 of 481 — indexed "Huey Stroup" and as being on p. 48):  Diamond Springs, El Dorado Co., CA, p. 348B/694, 4/4, enumerated 31 Sep 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Henry Stroup 21 M   "   Unknown
Wm F Tracy 22 M   "   Ky
John E Fletcher 23 M   Carpenter   "
Geo W Miller 23 M   "   "
Henry had to have been 20 or younger, unless the 1830 census is wrong about there being only one child in the household.  The fact that Henry gives younger ages in later censuses (28 in 1860, 39 in 1870, and 50 in 1880), suggests that he was not as old as 21 in 1850, and keep in mind that he had legal reasons to assert he was of age.  Also, Henry may not have been the informant, so it may have been up to one of his roommates to supply his age and birthplace, which would certainly account for Henry's birthplace being listed as "unknown."

Martin is apparently William Martin.

5c.  1860 Census Index/Images (online at Genealogy.com, Image #13 of 18 — indexed "L. The initial is wrong and there is the usual erroneous (but near to the mark) stab at his birthplace, but this has to be son Henry.

7.  Jean C. Tombaugh & Wendell C. Tombaugh.  1993. Fulton County Indiana Cemetery Inscriptions (with Genealogical Notes): Rochester Township.  Tombaugh House, Rochester, IN (online at the Fulton County, Indiana, Library web site; no pagination):
McKEE CEMETERY
This abandoned burying ground is on the old Alonzo Sheets (more recently Joseph Richards) farm, on 250N about one and three-tenths mile west of 250N & 400W, in Rochester Township, Fulton County, Indiana.  It is at the very back of a field about two city blocks north of the road. Stones were read as found, not in any rows.  Readings made in 1975...

Two other McKee families, living in Rochester Twp in 1850, near the Anthony W. McKee household, and who were probably related, were: (1) David A. McKee b. 1816 Ohio, identified as a "miller" in 1860 census, m. (by 1841) Sarah A., and it was this family, with whom Reubin Stroup resided in 1850. (2)...
1935 reveals: David A. McKee, d. Feb 20, 1873, ae 56y-3m-25d.  He resided in Rochester 1860, in Newcastle Twp in 1870, and his widow was living in Bloomingsburg, Newcastle Twp in 1880.]

STROUP, Reuben, son of J. & M., d. Dec 14, 1853, ae 16y-5d
[NOTE: There is no clear certainty as to the names of the parents of Reuben Strout. The name is spelled several ways: Stroup, Stroub, Straub, Stroab and Strobe.
Indiana Census 1840, includes: Samuel Stroup, in Elkhart Co. Barnhart's History of Fulton Co Ind, p. 32, states that Samuel Stroub was an early settler of Wayne Twp., Fulton Co., in 1840. Fulton Co Ind Early Tract Book, shows that Samuel Stroab of Cass Co Ind purchased land in Wayne Twp, 1841. Also Fulton Co Ind Commissioners Record "A", includes the name of Samuel Stroub in the list of Petit Jurors for Sept. Term 1843. And lastly, concerning the estate of Samuel Stroub, Admr., Jacob Shafer, was appt'd Sept. 29, 1849, and Final Report was accepted July Term 1854 (Jean C. & Wendell C. Tombaugh, Fulton Co Ind Probate Docket "A", 1836-1856).

Martha Stroub, b. ca. 1814 Penn, might have been the mother of Reuben Stroup. Obviously, Martha first m. a Stroup, and next Spencer Gill Dec. 25, 1849. Spencer Gill was a resident of Ripley Co Ind in 1840 (Census; also seeFulton Co Ind M.R.) Spencer Gill and his wife, Martha, his four children, and her son Silas V. Stroub (ae 3yr) were residents of Fulton Co Ind, Wayne Twp, in 1850 Census. The Fulton Co Ind Census 1860, reflects still a third marriage for Martha, and Fulton Co Ind M.R. indicate that on Nov. 15, 1857, Martha Gill m. Samuel Stubbs.
Samuel and Elias Stubb and Joseph Stroup were all residents of Shelby Co Ind in 1840, and were perhaps acquainted before coming to Fulton Co.
Samuel Stubbs, 1814-1889 (Fulton Co Ind Cem, Union Twp) and his 2nd wife, Martha, his four children, and her three children: Silas M. Stroub (ae 14yr), Albert A. Stroub (ae 11yr), and Mary Gill (ae 7yr), residents of Wayne Twp, Fulton Co Ind (Census 1860)
Fulton Co Ind Guardianship Index indicates that guardianship papers were filed on April 5, 1855, for Silas Strobe; final report date April 19, 1866. Silas M. Stroub was a Pvt Co A, 155 Regt Ind, in the Civil War (Peattie, History of Fulton Co Ind, p. 12)...

David McKEE was, indeed, related to Anthony W. McKEE:  David was Anthony's son.  David McKEE's wife was Sarah Ann (STROUP, daughter of Joseph STROUP & Mary TUCKER.  Reuben STROUP was a brother of Sarah Ann (STROUP) McKEE.  The Samuel STROUP in the 1840 census of Elkhart Co., IN, is not related to Reuben STROUP and Sarah Ann (STROUP) McKEE of Fulton Co., IN.
