The State of Michigan was formed from Michigan Territory
in 1837. The first Federal Census was taken in 1840, though there
were Territorial Censuses taken in 1820 and 1830. The entire 1890
census was lost.
In 1820, there were Territorial Censuses in these counties: Brown, Crawford (including Village of Prairie Du Chien), Macomb, Michilimackinack [now Mackinac], Monroe, Oakland, and Wayne, plus the Town of Detroit. No STRAUBs/etc. were found. In 1830, there were Territorial Censuses in these counties: Berrien, Brown, Cass, Chippewa, Crawford, Iowa, Lenawee, Michilimackinac, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, St. Joseph, Van Buren, Washtenaw, and Wayne, plus the City of Detroit. Only one STROUP was found. Townships are shown in the counties where they exist today, which in many cases is not the county in which they were found at the time each census was enumerated. |
