Haplogroup J2 is widespread in western and central Asia, the Middle East, Northern and Eastern Africa, and southern and eastern Europe, but its highest concentrations are in the Middle East and Anatolia where it is presumed to have originated.  The J2 subclade is most frequent around the Mediterranean, spreading thinly northwards into Europe and southwards into northern Africa; it appears to have penetrated as far as Britain by the Neolithic.

We have four project members who are Haplogroup J2, three of whom have a common ancestor in Jacob STROUP II of Lincoln Co., NC, and one who is a descendant of Mary STROUP of Gaston and Lincoln Cos., NC, who is not related to them.  One of the three descendants of Jacob STROUP II has had a basic SNP test, while the descendant of Mary STROUP has been deep SNP tested:

Descendants of Jacob STROUP II
J2, a.k.a., J-M172
(n = 3 / 1)
Descendant of Mary STROUP
J-2a4h, a.k.a., J-L24
(n = 1 / 1)
(n = number of individuals / number of lineages)

The three patrilineal descendants of Jacob STROUP II (1771-1846) match each other perfectly.  These three do not, however, remotely match the Haplogroup I1 descendants of Jacob STROUP I (1722-1804/5) of Lincoln [now Gaston] Co., NC, alleged grandfather of Jacob I.  In fact, Jacob I turns out to be the son of Johann Pieter STRAUB I, the 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia.  As it stands, the three descendants of Jacob II do not match any other STROUPs so far tested for the project, so Jacob II's parentage remains unknown.  They do have a DNA match with an individual surnamed BIDDLE, which suggests there may be an NPE in this line.  I have begun a Node Chart for Jacob STROUP I and Jacob STROUP II, to demonstrate their true relationships (or, rather, lack of any).

The J-M92 individual descends from the unknown partner of Mary STROUP (1845/6-1922) of Lincoln/Gaston Cos., NC.  As this male's identity is unknown, there was no expectation that he would match any of the STROUP lines in the project, and he doesn't.  He doesn't match anyone outside the project, either, so we currently have no clue as to his identity.

1Markers 26-37 unknown, unless this individual contacts me or joins the BIDDLE project.
Given their genetic distance from the modal haplotype at 37 markers (GD=14), it's not suprising that this haplotype is rare.  On the other hand, given their haplotype's close resemblance to the model haplotype at 12 markers (GD=1), it's surprising that they have so few matches at that level.  Other than their matches with each other, in the FTDNA database they have just three 12/12 matches, all outside the project (in surnames HARRIS, LEVY, and BIDDLE).  #33766 and #101265 continue to have a 25/25 match with the BIDDLE, and #33766 has a 35/37 match with the BIDDLE, while the matches with the other surnames fall away.  As of 14 Aug 2009, there is just one BIDDLE in the SMGF database and one in the Ysearch database, neither of whom is remotely a match.  Tinkering with the databases at Ysearch and SMFG, it appears that DYS385b=18 is the major sticking point in preventing matches.
This STROUP-BIDDLE match is looking like an NPE, either on the part of the STROUPs or the BIDDLE.  If the former, the NPE had to have occurred earlier in their lineages than Jacob II; if the latter, it could have happened at any time because this BIDDLE does not match the other four BIDDLEs so far tested at FTDNA.  There had been no BIDDLE project at FTDNA, so I requested one, and now the BIDDLE Surname Project is open (15 Nov 2007).  With enough testing, we can uncover where the NPE occurred.  I have repeatedly contacted the matching BIDDLE, but unfortunately have not had a reply.  Given that the "Y-DNA Matches" tab for #33766 shows the BIDDLE has a 12/12, 25/25, 35/37 match with our STROUPs, we can at least fill in the BIDDLE's first 25 markers.
Jim Cullen's haplogroup predictor gives, as its strongest probability, a 49% chance that his haplotype represents J-M172, which turns out to be correct.  FTDNA has run a complimentary (free) backbone SNP test for #101308, with a result of M172+ proving he is subclade J-M172.  Your project admin recommends at least one of you (preferably the one who has tested the most markers, viz., #101265) undergo deep SNP testing to determine your most downstream SNP and J subclade.
Two of these individuals have joined the Haplogroup J project.  Based on their haplotypes, the project has placed them in the J-2a4h subclade.  The values of 9 at DYS450 and 10 at DYS445 are correlated with being in that subclade.
Because of the rarity of this haplotype, your project admin recommends uploading your results to Ysearch, as an aid to J2 researchers — and to make life easier for your project admin.  If you don't upload your data to Ysearch, I have to manually enter your data each time I want to do a search for matches for you.

This individual descends from Mary STROUP (1845/6-1922) of Gaston/Lincoln Co., NC.  Her partner is unknown, so there was no expectation that he would match either of the Lincoln County STROUP lines, and he doesn't.  As it happens, he matches no one, at all,  in the FTDNA, Ysearch, or SMGF databases, so we do not yet have a clue as to the identity of his patrilineal line.
#139760 has been deep SNP tested with these results:
M172+ L26+ L27+ L24+ L25+ M137- M158-  M318- M12-
The positive value for M172 proves he is J2; the positive values for L26 and L27 prove he is J-2a4, and the positive values for L24 and L25 prove he is J-2a4h.  The negative values for M137, M158, and M318 prove he is not a subclade of J-2a4h (= J-L24), while the negative value for M12 redundantly proves he is not J-2b.  (Note that in the ISOGG classification, he is J-2a4h-1 = J-L25).
*Modals for markers 38-67 compiled by DGM from the Y-DNA Hap J Project as of 1 Jun 2008 (n=16).

What constitutes a match?
Matches in other surnames are usually mere coincidence, so please ignore them — I'll let you know when you shouldn't!
For 12 markers:  9 or less is a non-relative; 10-12, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
For 25 markers:  21 or less is a non-relative; 22-25, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
For 37 markers:  31 or less is a non-relative; 32-37, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
For 67 markers:  55 or less is a non-relative; 56-67, please see this Chart compiled by FTDNA.
