Except for the "singletons," who have no matches, each lineage group here represents one family, with a common ancestor in genealogical time.
2The individuals tallied in parenthesis are not surnamed LYON(S), meaning they appear to have an NPE in their patrilineal lines. 3Some members of Lineage IV have tested only 37 markers, so they need to upgrade their testing to prove their inclusion here, but one member of Lineage IV has a 106/111 match with a member of Lineage V, which is strong evidence for a common ancestor in genealogical time for both lineages. |

R1b is the most common haplogroup subclade in western Europe (see distribution map). It's frequency in France and the British Isles — the geographic origin of surname LYON(S) — is 70-90% of the population. Because R1b is so common, it is entirely possible to get low level matches in R1b that are merely coincidental and not an indicator of a near relationship (i.e., possessing a common ancestor within genealogical time). If an individual is anywhere near the modal haplotype for R1b, he will likely have hundreds, if not thousands, of matches at 12 markers; however, this number will drop as more markers are tested. Testing more markers reduces the risk of matching by mere coincidence. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Please note that you can easily match someone perfectly at 12 markers, even another LYON, and still not be related to them, at least not in a genealogical time frame — we're all related if you go back far enough. Likewise, you can have a near match to someone at 25 markers, even another LYON, and still not be related to them. Only in cases where the R1b haplotype is rare can you have any confidence in a match at less than 67 markers. After years of running Y-DNA projects (since 2004), I have come to consider 67 markers the workable standard — and the minimum in R1b. |

What constitutes a match?
Matches in other surnames are usually mere coincidence, so please ignore them — I'll let you know when you shouldn't!
