The mutation defining the parent subclade of J2 (= J-M172) occurred an estimated 18.5 ± 3.5 thousand years ago.  Today, the subclade is distributed throughout southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, and northern Africa.  See Figure 2, Map C in Semino et al. (2004. American Journal of Human Genetics 74(5):1023-1034) for distribution of the parent subclade, J2 (= J-M172).
Haplogroup J members are encouraged to also join the Y-DNA-J Haplogroup Project at FamilyTreeDNA to contribute to the body of knowledge accumulating about this haplogroup and, thus, to increase our own knowledge about ourselves.

This individual has no matches in the LYON(S) project, but he has significant matches with eight members of the BRACKETT project.  We are presumably looking at an NPE, but it remains to be seen who has it.  While the more probable answer may seem that the LYON is really a BRACKETT, it's entirely possible all of these BRACKETTs descend from a single BRACKETT with a LYON NPE.  It's unfortunate that we do not have paper genealogies for most of the BRACKETTs.  BigY testing might resolve the question, but both the LYON and at least one of the BRACKETTs would need to be tested, preferably more of both.  It's not insignificant that the LYON and at least one of the BRACKETTs was an early resident of NC.
There is also reason for the LYON to start testing cousins, as in the strategy I describe, here, to be certain the haplotype doesn't appear nearer in his patrilineal line.
         
Some files in the Public Member Trees at Ancestry.com allege this ancestral line for the Robert1 above:

John > John of Dorchester > John > William of Roxbury

However, William of Roxbury is one of the Haplogroup R1b-DF5 Middlesex LYONs, and John of Dorchester is one of the Haplogroup I2-A1514 Dorchester LYONs, so no biological connection is remotely possible, with each other or to our subject.

Matches in other surnames are usually mere coincidence, so please ignore them — I'll let you know when you shouldn't!
