Modal STR Haplotypes for Some Y-DNA Haplogroups
I'm creating this collection of modal haplotypes for my own personal use, but I'm putting it online in case it may be of help to anyone else — and to encourage you to share a modal haplotype if you have one.  I'm looking for both root(*) modals and modals inclusive of downstream subclades.

Ideally, FTDNA would maintain a table of these modals for us, extracted from their own database — if their software can produce modals for the subgroups in our projects, I see no reason it can't produce modals for haplogroup subclades in their entire database.  Perhaps if enough of us ask for these, they will provide them.

I welcome any corrections or additions, and, for your convenience, I will be happy to add modal haplotypes not on my "want list."  I think a central location for these will be welcome.  This page became so large, I moved Haplogroup R1b to its own page.

Please note:  "Exclusive of subclades" means I eliminated those shown by their FTDNA haplogroup designation as a downstream clade; however, this category is bound to include those who have simply not tested downstream SNPs.

There's no particular significance to the coloring of cells in the table; color is used simply to make the differences between the modals easy to spot.

Sample sizes are "reversely cumulative," that is, the number at 12 markers includes the number at 25, 37, 67, and 111 markers, and so on.

Since compiling these modals back in 2012, the Haplogroup G project has been split into sub-projects.  The original Haplogroup G project did not remain the base project, but was turned into one of the subclade projects, which is the reason the old link (viz., .../G-YDNA/) no longer takes you to the base project, but to the G-L497 Project.  The base project is now called the "G-Uncategorized & Root-Level Men Project."

L140 is just downstream of L497, and the modal for DYS388 remains 13 for the new G-L497 Project.  The modal for DYS388 remains 12 for the other subprojects and for the Uncategorized-Root group.  The frequencies here (as of 21 Mar 2014) are n=1153 for the G-L497 project and n=2938 for all other Haplogroup G projects, combined, so the modal for DYS388 remains 12 for Haplogroup G overall.

The modals values and "n" shown in the table remain the ones extracted in 2012.

DYS391 bounces between a narrow range for all haplogroups, most often being 10 or 11, so the modal value may shift depending on sample size and/or sample bias.  In the case of these three modal haplotypes and these three samples —and for what it's worth — these are the frequencies of each allele at DYS391:

Many R1a1 (and downstream subclade) individuals have six alleles at DYS464, and a few have five or seven.  For the three clades in this table, four alleles was the modal number, so I arbitrarily reduced the number to four for everyone, preferentially eliminating duplicated alleles over singletons.
     
The four values for DYS710 for Haplogroup R-1a1 are:  30, 31, 32, and 36.
