Kentucky was formed from Virginia in 1792.  The 1790 Virginia census was lost, and the 1800 Kentucky census was lost.  Many names from the 1820 census of Todd Co., KY, were lost due to torn pages.

Tennessee was formed from North Carolina in 1796.  The 1790 North Carolina census is extant, but does not include the western counties that became Tennessee.  The 1800 Tennessee census was lost, and the 1810 Tennessee census was lost, except for two cities in Rutherford County.  Of the 48 counties extant at the 1820 census, 22 were lost, including Montgomery County.

The entire 1890 census was lost.

Where available, I have tried to substitute other records, mainly land and tax records, to indicate presence in the county.

In 1779-80, the border between what were then the states of Virginia and North Carolina (now Kentucky and Tennessee, repectively) was surveyed by Dr. Thomas Walker and Daniel Smith at the agreed upon latitude of 36°30'N.  This survey line, called "Walker's Line," turned out to be inaccurate.  It was too far South, thus extending the State of Kentucky into what should have been the State of Tennessee.

In 1820, after much dispute, it was agreed that Tennessee had a right to this land, so the line was resurveyed in 1826 by Thomas J. Matthews.  Thus, a strip of land from 6 to 12 miles wide that was formerly considered to be in Kentucky became part of Tennessee.  This boundary change matters to us because Christian and Todd Counties lost 12 miles of their southern edge to Montgomery Co., TN.

Despite the official boundary change, Kentucky was allowed to continue making the grants for the remaining open land in the strip.  In the case of our pioneer ancestors, this means that while their early land and tax records place them in Christian County, some of them later turn out to have been in what is now Montgomery Co., TN.  In particular, it means that James DAVIS, father of Isaac DAVIS, was actually living in what is now Montgomery Co., TN, despite the fact that his early land and tax records place him in Christian County.  In other cases, our ancestors turn out to have been in southern Todd Co., KY, which was formed in 1820 from Christian and Logan Cos.

I'm still in the process of trying to determine where everyone actually was before 1830.  If you know, please share.

With regard to the individual census record tables from 1810 to 1850 (links in the navigation bar below) , I started extracting these records when I first began working on the family genealogy back in 1998.  At the time, I had very little idea who was and was not related to us, so I "cast the net widely" in deciding which records to pull.  Experience has since taught me that this kind of "shotgun" approach is not an efficient way to do genealogical research.  I could pare these five record tables down substantially without reducing their usefulness to me or my cousins, but I see no reason to delete these records when they might help someone else.  However, I am not transferring all of those census records to this timeline page, so there are far fewer records here, on this page, than there are on the census record pages.  In other words, do check the individual 1810 through 1850 pages, even if you don't find someone of interest on this page.

[List of Counties]

Christian County — includes pre-1820 Todd County and part of pre-1826 Montgomery County, TN
Christian County was formed in 1797 from Logan County, which had been formed from Lincoln County in 1792, when Kentucky achieved statehood.  Until 1820, Christian County included the western half of Todd County; and until 1826, when the state line between Kentucky and Tennessee was re-surveyed, Christian and Todd Counties included strips of land on their southern border  that was transferred to Montgomery County, TN.
There were two James DAVIS's in early Christian County that were[unfinished]
In 1780, James DAVIS (#1) received a Virginia land grant near Whitley's Station, Lincoln County (then VA, now KY), which is his first documented appearance in Kentucky.  He sold this land and, in 1785, purchased land from his brother-in-law, Col. John MONTGOMERY (namesake of Montgomery Co., TN), on the Red River in what was then the "Military Reserve" of Lincoln County, but what became Logan County in 1792, then Christian County in 1797, then Todd County in 1820, then Montgomery Co., TN, in 1826.
Samuel Emory DAVIS is the father of Jefferson DAVIS, President CSA, who was born 1807/8 in Fairview, Christian [now Todd] Co., KY, on the watershed of the West Fork of the Red River [WFRR].  Please note the differences between Samuel DAVIS and James DAVIS (#1):
  • Samuel originated in Georgia, not Virginia;
  • Samuel first appears in Christian/Todd County more than a decade later than James;
  • Samuel leaves the county a decade earlier than James, and
  • Samuel migrates to Mississippi, while James goes to Missouri.
So, beyond their brief geographic proximity, there is nothing in the paper genealogy of Samuel Emory DAVIS to support a connection to James DAVIS (#1) — or to any other adult DAVIS in the county.  Please see this page (and those linked to it) for records of additional Christian/Todd County DAVISes and further census records of Samuel Emory's descendants
There is a Joseph DAVIS taxed in Christian County in 1797 whom I'd initially taken to be either the son of Samuel Emory or James #2, in part because both had sons named, Joseph, and this Joseph is a prosperous land and slave owner, as we would expect their sons to be.  However, neither of their sons was an adult or married by 1797.  So, who is this Joseph DAVIS?
The Christian County tax list include residents who own land in another county.  For example, Simon FRENCH moved to Christian County along with his in-laws, but still owned his land in Warren Co., KY, so he is taxed for it on the Christian County rolls (see below).
Capt. John C. CLARK, s/o Col. Henry CLARK, was the County Clerk of Christian County from its founding in 1797 to 1824 and was one of the biggest land-owners in the county.  Here, I show him as taxed on the West Fork of Red River with the rest of his family, but he owned land all over the county, plus some adjacent counties.

State of Tennessee: Montgomery County — for pre-1826, see Christian County
Named for Col. John MONTGOMERY of Revolutionary War fame.  Formed in 1796 from Tennessee County, which was formed in 1788 from Davidson County.  A northern section was treated as Christian County until 1826.  By the time the county has its first surviving census, in 1830, most of our kin had moved on.
