On p. 11, in an abstract of the will of Ebenezer LYON, signed 22 Jan
1738/9, Ebenezer names his daughter, Elizabeth LYON, wife of Ephraim CLARK,
and grandchildren:
...Elizabeth, Ephraim, Hannah, Darkis, Henery, Riderous, Nathaniel,
and Ichabod CLARK... |
Also according to the will, five of Elizabeth's children were under
age:
...Elizabeth, Ephraim, Hannah, Ideras and Darkis... |
With the inference by their exclusion that Henry, Nathaniel, and Ichabod
were of age, but we know Henry was not, and in an 1800 deed in Christian
Co., KY, Ephraim states he is the eldest son of his father, Ephraim Sr.
I believe "under age" meant the girls were under 18 and the boys were
under 21, which means the girls were born after 1721 and the boys were
born after 1718. We also know that Ryderus was born bef. 1732 because
he was tithable in 1748 and males became tithable at age 16 (females were
not tithed). However, we know Henry was born in 1732, so why was
he not included with the under-age children? Henry was not tithable
in 1748, but became tithable in 1749, at age 16, which is consistent with
his birthdate in 1732.
Mary was not mentioned as a granddaughter in Ebenezer LYON's will, so
presumably Mary was born after 22 Jan 1738/9. We know of her existence
because her husband, John HANNAH, named his "brother-in-law," Henry Clark,
as executor of his will. |

*I'm afraid the record
(see next source) does not read "Henry Clark," it reads "Ash: Clark."
(At that time, the colon was used to indicate abbreviation.) It's
very difficult to know what is going on here. It's an odd — almost
impossible — mistake for the Lister to have made. My first thought
was that it was another son coming of age, but if "Ash" came of age in
1750, he would have had to have been born in 1733/4 and thus have been
alive when Ebenezer Lyon wrote his will, in which no "Ash" was mentioned.
Or is the will mistaken? It certainly was in the case of Henry.
Or is "Ash" some other kin — a nephew, perhaps? |
