and that was the issue! (Mark Hopkins predeceased his wife, so she automatically inherited. When she died, and for years afterwards, the estate was highly and very publicly contested.) |

Martha Abigail (HOPKINS) BROWN, my maternal grandmother's maternal grandmother, and her descendants knew they were related to Mark HOPKINS, possibly because of the families' proximity in Lockport, NY, in 1837, but they didn't know how to prove it. My family was very poor during the years when Mark HOPKINS's estate was being litigated, and they would dream of being able to prove their connection to him and inherit some of his fortune. My mother tells me of wistful evenings during her childhood when she and her siblings lay on the living room floor, sprawled upon the newspapers, reading every word of the highly publicized events. What they probably didn't realize, then, was just how distantly we are related to him: Martha and Mark were 5th cousins. Even had they been able to prove our connection — as I am able to do, now — they were never remotely in contention for receiving any of his money. But then, when you're poor, it's nice to have a dream… | ||
Daniel Putnam HOLT, brother of the above Philancia (HOLT) HOPKINS, married Sarah HUNTINGTON, a distant cousin of Collis Potter HUNTINGTON, another of the California "Big Four." |
