Jacob CUPP
Sibby BREEDING
NOTICE:  Our subject is one of several Jacob CUPP / COPP / KOPP in the southern U.S. being mixed up by secondary sources.  Please see this disambiguation page for my ongoing attempt at sorting them out.  And please note, especially, that our subject is not the Jacob CUPP who married Edwina GOIN.  Note, too, that our subject seems to move around a lot in the early decades.  These movements, especially movements "back and forth" between the same places, are very often an alarm that two persons with the same name are being mixed up — the most common mistake in genealogy is to confuse people with the same name.
Husband:  Jacob CUPP
Birth:  1764/5, PA
Death:  1850-60, presumably in Laurel Co., KY
Occupation:  farmer
Parents:  unknown — not Conrad & Maria Magdalene (__?__) KOPF and not Andrew & Mary Elizabeth (WYNKOLD) KAPP.
Marriage:  10 Jun 1788, Shenandoah Co., VA
Wife:  Sibria / Sibitha "Sibby" BREEDING
Birth:  1770, NC
Death:  1850-60, presumably in Laurel Co., KY
Occupation:  homemaker
Father:  Spencer BREEDING  (1730-1808)
Mother:  Priscilla Elizabeth HURST (1730-    )
Children:
In the 1850 census, Margaret and Elizabeth each give birthplace, TN, but is that really where they were born?  Children often believe the place where they grew up as where they were born.  Note that TN did not become a state until 1796, so at the time, it would have been NC.
  1.  Margaret "Peggy" CUPP, b. 1790/1
  2.  Elizabeth CUPP, b. 25 Nov 1792

Children born in Grayson Co., VA:
  3.  (Serilda) Catharine "Caty/Katie" CUPP, b. 1796/7
  4.  Sarah Abigail "Abby" CUPP, b. 1799/1800
  5.  Isaac William CUPP, b. 1799/180
  6.  Keziah / Kesiah / Kesia CUPP, b. 1802; d. 1842
  7.  Aham CUPP, b. 1804/5

Children born in Claiborne Co., TN:
  8.  George W. CUPP, b. 1809/10
  9.  Valentine CUPP, b. 1811/12
10.  Adeline CUPP, b. 1814/5 or Jan 1816, TN or VA
11.  Charles L. CUPP, b. 1815/6
12.  Ransom CUPP, b. 19 Oct 1817
13.  (Daughter A) CUPP, b. 1810-20 — almost certainly Mary "Polly" CUPP, b. 30 Jan 1820

Some sources erroneously give them this child:
William [B?] CUPP, b. 1813, KY; d. 1894; m. 1838, Mason Co., KY, Letitia R. JENKINS; 1840/50/60 censuses in Mason Co., KY; 1870/80 censuses in Grundy Co., MO

Jacob & Sibby were not in KY in 1813.  Jacob did not go to Laurel Co., KY (which is nowhere near Mason Co.), until after 1840, so none of Jacob & Sibby's children were born in KY.  There is no room for this child in Jacob & Sibby's household in the 1820 (VA) or 1830 (TN) censuses.  In the 1880 census, William says his father was born in PA and his mother in MD; Jacob was born in PA, but Sibby was born in NC.  So, William CUPP of Mason Co., KY, cannot possibly be the son of Jacob & Sibby (BREEDING) CUPP.  He is, in fact, the son of Philip & Hannah (MURPHY) KOPP/CUPP of Mason Co., KY.

Compounding the error, some sources also erroneously attach the William [B?] CUPP of Mason Co., KY, to "Savanna Jane" CUPP, a widow in the 1850 census of Hawkins Co., TN — but how can his wife be a widow when he lived until 1894?!  She is, in fact, the widow of John W. CUPP, of Hawkins Co., TN, who died in 1846.
