Discussion:
John and Hannah (WALDRUM) THOMPSON of Botetourt Co., VA, had at least four sons: Thomas, John, William, and James. Their son, John, married Winifred BRICKEY; their son, William, married Temperance BRICKEY. The two brothers, John and William, were together in the 1820 Census of Washington Co., IL, and in the 1830 Census of Greene Co., IL. In 1830, both brothers and their wives were alive and would have been in their 60s; and both couples had adult sons named John who resided in Greene Co. So, based on this knowledge, we would expect to find three John THOMPSONs as heads-of-households in the 1830 Census of Greene Co., IL: 1. an elderly couple: John THOMPSON (s/o John & Hannah) and his wife, Winifred BRICKEYYet, in checking this census (see above), we find only two John THOMPSONs, both of whom are young. Where are John and Winifred? A further check of the numerical census data reveals that only two THOMPSON households contain couples over age 45. One is the expected William and Temperance (BRICKEY) THOMPSON on p. 10, line 19; the other is the household of Thomas THOMPSON on p. 9, line 21. This latter household consists of an elder couple, a younger couple, and two young girls under five years of age. John and Winifred must be living with their son, Thomas, who was married in 1826 and would be expected to have one to three children by 1830. That these two children are girls solves another problem. There were two Thomas THOMPSONs who married in Greene Co., IL, in 1826. One married Betsy ASHER, the other married Eveline BONIG. Different sources have attached John and Winifred (BRICKEY) THOMPSON as parents of one or the other of these Thomases one source (the LDS Ancestral File) has their son married to both women. However, there were definitely two men, as both show up with their wives and children in the 1850 census. Based on the 1850 Census, we know that Thomas and Betsy's first two children, born before 1830, were girls, and that Thomas and Eveline's first two children, born before 1830, were one boy and one girl. These facts appear to establish that in the 1830 Census, the Thomas on p. 9, line 21 the one with two daughters is the Thomas who married Betsy ASHER and that, because the elder John and Winifred appear to be living with him, he is the Thomas who is the son of John and Winifred (BRICKEY) THOMPSON. It would also appear to establish that the Thomas THOMPSON on p. 9, line 17 the young couple with a boy and girl under age five is the husband of Eveline BONIG, who is living next door to and is most likely the son of William and Roxanna (BONE) THOMPSON. |
