2.  1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #1 of 8 indexed as "John Krouph, Sr."; numerical data pages precede the name pages; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤
1840 MO Jefferson Co. Joachim Twp. Roll 224, pp. 105A-106B Ln. 5 John Strouph, Jnr 100 010 - 100 010 0300000 no slaves
These data indicate:
No. & Sex Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 male 4 or under 1835-1840 = William (b. 1837/8)
1 male 20-29 1810-1820 = John (b. 1810/11)
1 female 4 or under 1835-1840 = Susan (b. 1834/5)
1 female 20-29 1810-1820 = Elizabeth (b. 1816/7)
3 persons employed in agriculture
The enumerator obviously did not know how to properly use the "occupation" field only John is an adult male farmer here.  Listed two lines above John's father, Peter STROUP, who was also enumerated "Strouph," but he was mis-indexed as "Joeph."  Also, listed one line below William OGLES, who is three lines below Jane OGLES.

3.  1850 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #141 of 153):  District No. 42 [Joachim Twp.], Jefferson Co., MO, p. 477A, 1058/1058, enumerated 30 Oct 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤

Elizabeth " 33 F       Mo
Susan     " 15 F       Mo
William   " 12 M       Mo
Peter     " 10 M       Mo
Austin    "  5 M       Mo
George    "  2 M       Mo
Hercules Ogle 20 M   Laborer   Mo
Andrew Stroup 18 M   do   Mo
Andrew's being listed last is supposed to indicate that he is not John's son, which is supported by the fact that he is not in John's household in the 1840 census.  The fact that Andrew was born before Elizabeth & John were married only suggests that John had a prior wife because John is old enough to have had a prior wife.  But it is also possible that, as an eight-year-old, Andrew did not like living with his step-mother, so may have been living with his grandparents or other kin.  Bottom line:  it's going to be tough proving who Andrew's parents were without evidence other than the census.

______ Millard 14 M W at home     "
______ Laura 14 F W at home     "
I'm assuming "Laura" is Clara, that is, Clarissa from 1870.  Susan and Peter are married, so that accounts for all the children, except Mary.  Listed next to their uncle, Peter STROUP, Jr
