2.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  There are two unmarried George STROUPs in the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., MO, about the right age to be our subject.  Neither is living with his parents, and these may in fact be the same young man, enumerated twice.  Julia A. PEARCE (æ 7, b. IL) is living in Jefferson Co., MO (p. 411A), with her presumed brother, Barton A. PEARCE (æ 8, b. IL).  They are living with Henry Clay & Nancy (HINSON) TODD (q.v.).

3.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #32 of 35):  Richwoods P.O., Big River Twp., Jefferson Co., MO, p. 690, PN 141, 1071/1061, enumerated 9 Aug 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Geo Stroup 28 M   farming   50 Mo
Mary   " 21 F         "
Silas  6 M         "
Mary 6/12 F         "
Rudolph  4 M         "
Rufus  5 M         "
Nancy Todd 40 F   Spinstress     "
Bartlett Pierce 21 M   farm-hand     "
It's hard to fathom this record.  Surely this is the George STROUP who married Julia Ann PIERCE, sister of Bartlett/Barton PIERCE, in 1856.  So, who is Mary?  And who are the children?  And why are they out of order?  I can find no Silas, Rudolph, or Rufus STROUP who could be these individuals, anywhere in 1870 or 1880.   Is this some kind of gross enumerator error?

4.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  can't find George, and I did a page-by-page search of Meramec Twp., Franklin Co., MO, and Central Twp., Jefferson Co., MO.  Barton PIERCE (æ 27, b. IL) is married and living in Central Twp., Jefferson Co., MO (p. 230B).
