David STROUP
Catharine __?__
Please Note:  Our subject's named children are based on secondary sources, plus some circumstantial evidence, for example, the three younger sons below share in common that they lived in Union Twp., Mifflin Co., PA, and that they moved on to Adams Co., OH.  Documentation of a direct connection is desirable, and Y-DNA testing of patrileal line male descendants of all three named sons would at least prove they are one family.

So far, only one such descendant, through son John, has been Y-DNA tested.  He had unexpected matches in two other families — one STROUP and one STRAUBE — neither of which connect on paper to each other or to our subject.  Please see this page for test results and lineages, and please see this page for a discussion of the results.

2a.  Census Index:  U.S. Selected Counties, 1790 (Broderbund CD-311):  not found.  The only David STROUP indexed on this CD is in Northampton [now Lehigh] Co., PA, and he does not appear to be our subject (has two sons and no daughters).  On the other hand, he's the right age and the tallies in these early censuses were often inaccurate.

In the photo of David's stone, I find the age unreadable, and based on his obituary, it should be 94, which is also more consistent with his age in the 1840 census.  In the photo of Catharine's stone, I can't clearly read the "Wife of," but surely that is what's there.

10.  Messages posted to the STROUP Surname Board (online at Ancestry.com), including these items:
from "Who's Who in the Early Records" in the publication "The People of Mifflin County, 1755 - 1798," a David Stroup appears in the records with the following taxable assets: a house worth $106, log, 1 story, 1 window with 4 panes, 22 x 18 with a springhouse.

From the publication "Mifflin County Obituaries," David Stroup of Union Township died 5-24-1850, age 94.

In "History of Westmorland Co." it tells about Sarah E. Stroup married to Mr. McGraw.  Sarah was Bernard Stroup's daughter and it tells that Bernard was the son of David Stroup.
I rather doubt that Bernard STROUP was David's son, or at least this David's son.  David appears to have lived his entire life in Mifflin County, while Bernard lived his in Blair County.  There is also some tentative aDNA evidence suggesting Bernard is related to the Hg I1-L592 STRAUBs, while an individual decended from David's alleged son, John, is Hg R-M269 — in other words, they're not remotely related.  Testing of more descendants can give us the answer.
