1.  Interview of my mother, Nina Gale (STRAUB) MATTHIESEN, daughter of Albert Roy "Bert" STRAUB, grandson of our subject (via son, George).  She told me Bert's grandfather was "Andrew S. STRAUB."  This is the only indication I have for Andrew having a middle intial, "S."  I've no reason to think my mother was wrong, but of course, she could have been.  She said Andrew who came from "somewhere in the east" (as in "east of Ohio," viz., Pennsylvania).  My maternal grandmother (Bert STRAUB's wife), told me we were "Pennsylvania Dutch" — who are, of course, Deutsch, not Dutch!  Andrew's land patents and 1850 census record confirm a birth in PA, as do the census records of his children, who show their father born in PA.

*The girls are too old to be Nancy's daughters.  They did not show up in the 1830 Census, so they cannot be Priscilla's — or even Andrew's— daughters.  They could easily be hired help.  Andrew was a merchant living over his store in "downtown" Waldo [my grandfather, Andrew's grandson, had memories of the store], so between having the store and Nancy having four sons and no daughters, I can see them hiring a couple of live-in girls to help.  Listed next to Andrew's presumed brother, Samuel STRAUB

It's a mystery why the enumerator didn't put "mother-in-law" in the relationship column for Nancy.  Also, Wilson and Maria are living in Nancy's house, so she could hardly be considered a boarder in her own home!  Column 20 indicates Nancy is disabled.  Listed four household from Nancy's step-son, John J. Pettibone operated a tavern in the village of Waldo in the early 1830's.  Wesson, Hass, and Brundige were the first merchants, Danial Sturges the first blacksmith, and Dr. Lewis the first physician in the village.  Waldo was incorporatd as a village by a special act of the legislature in February 1845.  The following May, Judson A. Bebe was elected mayor; John J. Jacobs, recorder; and John Porterfield, Andrew Straub, Jasper Partridge, John Byers, and Chancy Lewis, trustees.
The significant thing here, for us, is the mention of HASS/HAAS because Andrew's brother, Benjamin, married a HAAS.  But Benjamin STRAUB married Elizabeth HAAS back in PA, and I had not suspected any HAAS'es had come to Marion Co.  It is our family's oral tradition that Andrew owned the tavern in Waldo.  My maternal grandfather, Albert STRAUB (Andrew's grandson), who was born in Prospect, but grew up in Waldo, said he remembered a large, two-story tavern made of logs and constructed by the local Amerindians under the direction of his grandfather.  He said his grandparents lived in the upper story of the building (Andrew was deceased before my grandfather was born, but Andrew's wife, Nancy, lived well into her 80s, so my grandfather was an adult when she died).

I don't know what to make of this record because there's never been any doubt, whatsoever — and evidence solidly substantiates — that Andrew was born in Pennsylvania.

The IT guys on the big iron hated the Personal Computer because it gave users freedom and power; now they've conned you into being back under their control.
