George ELY
Eva Christina STROH-SCHNEIDER
Please Note:  this page is very tentative as I have few primary records to support it, and secondary sources are not in agreement.  Apparently someone has a few primary records, but secondary sources are not sharing them.  If you have anything concrete on this family, please share.  Two alleged descendants of our subject have been Y-DNA tested for the ELY Y-DNA Surname Project, and they are a solid match in Haplogroup E-V13.

8.   The Will of George ELY of Finley Twp., Washington Co., PA.  Washington Co., PA, Will Book #4, p. 502.  Signed 10 Apr 1824; proved 1 Apr 1830.  George has been said to have died in March of 1830, but wills have been recorded months, even years, after the death of the testator, so unless there is something else to coroborate his death date, all we can say for certain is that he died some time between 10 Apr 1824 and 1 Apr 1830, though most likely closer to the latter date than the former.

9b.  The Raymond Martin Bell Anthology"The Families of George Ealy, East Finley Township, and Michael Ely, Buffalo Township, Washington [County], Pennsylvania" (online at the Washington Co., PA, GenWeb site).
Says first record of George is when he is taxed (along with Michael ELY) in 1773 in Lebanon Twp. [then, Lancaster Co., now Lebanon Co., PA].  Says George was married in 1771 (Michael in 1772).  Says that by 1779, George was in Pine Grove Twp. [then Berks, now Schuylkill, Co., PA]. In the 1800 Census, says George was in Shamokin Twp., Northumberland Co., PA.  Says George moved to Canton [now South Franklin] Twp., Washington Co., PA, in 1807.  Says George moved to Finley [now East Finley] Twp. in 1822.  Says George died in 1830.
The George ELY in Northumberland Co., PA, in 1800, is not our subject.

JONAS ELY, MD... is a native of Greene County, Penna, born March 2, 1853...  His ancestry were of Germany from which country the great-grandfather emigrated at an early date to America; on the voyage he was so ill that at one time he was thought to be dead and was about to be cast into the sea, when signs of life were discovered in him happily in time to save him from a watery grave...
The "great-grandfather" is our subject, George ELY.
