Abia's wife is Esther/Hester (MENSER) STACKHOUSE, sister of Jackson's late wife, Caroline (MENSER) CUPP.  Secondary sources have mis-interpreted this record to mean that Samuel CUPP and John CUPP are Esther's sons from a presumed prior marriage (to Jackson's twin brother, Oliver Perry CUPP), but they are not.  Samuel, at least, is the son of Jackson's deceased first wife, Caroline (MENSER) CUPP.  In other words, Samuel is Esther's nephew, not her son — note that Abia & Esther have their own son Samuel, æ 17 (who was with them in the 1850 census as well).  John is a bit more problematic.  I suspect he, too, is Caroline (MENSER) CUPP's son, but I cannot explain his absence from her household in 1850.

See George's page for the full record and for a discussion of the problems reading this record.  Both Cordon and Thomas should have been enumerated as "Brother," not "Boarder."  Also, Cordon was born in 1867, not 1857; his age was first written as 32, then overwritten with 33 (it hinges on whether he was born in Jan or Jun, and as he was age 13 and 3 in prior censuses, that says "Jan"); it appears his status was first written "S," then overwritten with something, possibly "Wd."
