Census Timelines of Some Selected DAVIS Families including
Kin of Jefferson DAVIS, President CSA
in the 1790-1940 Censuses of the United States
Lines known or believed to be related are highlighted with the same color.
Descendants of John DAVIS of Gloucestershire, 1623
b. ca. 1590s in Gloucestershire, England; immigrant to Virginia in 1623 on the ship, John & Francis
Descendants of James DAVIS (1744-1822) & Hannah RAMSEY
of Wythe Co., VA > Christian Co., KY [now Montgomery Co., TN] > Randolph Co., MO
Descendants of Samuel Emory DAVIS (1756-1824) & Jane COOK
GA > KY > MS; father of Jefferson DAVIS, President CSA

As no certain patrilineal line descendant of Evan DAVIS, great-grandfather of Jefferson DAVIS, has yet been Y-DNA tested, it's unknown whether his descendants are related to "our" DAVISes, but George Washington THOMPSON (1835-1927), a grandson of Isaac DAVIS (see below), was absolutely adament he was cousin to Jefferson DAVIS.  Given his grandfather's geographic proximity to Samuel Emory DAVIS — in Christian/Todd Co., KY — it's no surprise how this family legend arose, but the difference in all other locations on their migration paths makes it very unlikely the legend is true, not to mention that no paper connection has been found.

The original lack of or subsequent loss of some early censuses are a considerable problem for researchers of these DAVIS families because the missing censuses include:  the 1790, 1800, and 1810 censuses of Georgia and Mississippi; the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Virginia and Kentucky; and the 1790 through 1820 censuses of Missouri.  Where available, tax lists are substituted.
In the 1800-1850 censuses of Christian/Todd Co., KY, I've extracted all the DAVISes, but beyond there, I only track the two James DAVIS families and the Samuel Emory DAVIS family — and their descendants.  It's possible one or more of these other DAVIS families is related to one of our principle DAVIS families, but it will almost certainly require Y-DNA testing to prove it — and if you are a male DAVIS, for heaven's sake, get Y-DNA tested

KY:  Christian County — now Todd Co., KY, or Montgomery Co., TN
Christian Co. was formed in 1797 from Logan Co., which was formed in 1792 from Lincoln Co., which was formed in 1780 from Kentucky Co., VA, which originally comprised all of what is now the State of Kentucky.
Todd Co. was formed in 1820 from eastern Christian Co. and western Logan Co.
When the KY-TN state line was redrawn in 1826, the southernmost 12 miles of Christian and Todd Cos. became part of Montgomery Co., TN.

Fairview, birthplace of Jefferson DAVIS in 1807/8, straddles the Christian-Todd county line, but is officially in Christian County; the DAVIS memorial and homestead is on the Todd County side of the line.
James DAVIS lived in the part of Christian/Todd County that later became part of Montgomery Co., TN, so he actually lived substantially South of Samuel Emory DAVIS.  It's presumed his children lived near him.
Spring Creek is today partly in southernmost Todd County and, mostly, Montgomery County.
