Legend for numerical data [grey indicates
that particular datum was not taken that year]: A = White Males 21
or over; B = White Males 16-20; C = Blacks over 16; D = Total Blacks; E
= Horses & Mares (gelded male horses and female horses); F = Stud Horses
(intact male horses); 1st/2nd/3rd refer to 1st Rate, 2nd Rate, or 3rd Rate
land. Abbreviations: W F R R = West Fork Red River; T Water
= Tradewater River. |
From 1798 to 1806, Henderson Co. was adjacent to
northern Christian Co. (vicinity of Tradewater River in the west and the
Pond River in the east). Today, this is southernmost Hopkins Co.
Note how in 1799, 1800, and 1802, the household
of John Thompson (Sr) contains 3 adult males, yet in 1801 and 1803, it
contains only one adult male, while at the same time, a John Jr and a James
Jr appear those two years, but not in 1799, 1800 and 1802. Notice,
too, how the land holdings go back and forth. Obviously, John Jr
and James Jr are sons of John Sr, which is consistent with what is known
of this family, namely, that "John Sr" is Capt. John Thompson (later of
Cape Girardeau Co., MO), whose two eldest sons were John and James — his
only sons who were of age while the family was still living in Kentucky.
