Rival KNOBLOCH is Harry's brother. They are two of many boarders
in what was six pages of nothing but single laboring men (from all over
the world) living in boarding houses and dormitories. Activity seems
to be mostly mining, smelting, and milling.

7. Obituary of Delight (WILLIS) KNOBLOCH from the Fallon Standard,
7 May 1947, front page (copy courtesy of the Churchill County Museum in
Fallon):
Delight Knobloch Buried Today at Forest Lawn
Death Ends May Years of Ill Health for Highly Esteemed
Woman
This morning at 9 o'clock at Forest Lawn in Glendale, Calif., Mrs.
Harrie Knobloch was laid to rest. She has passed away early Monday
morning at the University of California hospital in Los Angeles.
About a month ago she had undergone a spinal operation in the hopes that
she would again be able to walk after almost ten years of invalidism.
The Knobloch family was living on the ranch west of town now owned
by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pierce when Mrs. Knobloch was stricken with a paralysis
from which she never recovered. She had received treatment at Stanford
hospital in San Francisco, but had never been
able to walk again.
She was born Delight Willis, August 13, 1898, youngest daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Willis, pioneers of this project,
in Missouri. When a child of 6 she came with her family to Fallon
where her father took up a homestead in 1905 in Soda Lake district.
This place was soon sold and the family purchased the ranch in Old River
later known as the Whalen ranch and now owned by Joe Tarzyn. After
graduating from the high school and San Jose Teachers college in San Jose,
Calif., she taught school at McDermitt and McGill. While at McGill
she met and married Harrie Knobloch in 1920. He had just been
discharged from overseas service, World War I.
They returned to Fallon to make their home and it is here that their
two children, Harriet and Carl, were born.
After Mrs. Knobloch's illness the ranch was sold and they lived
at Lahontan for a number of years wher Mr. Knobloch was employed at the
power house until his death in September 1942. After that the family
resided at Hawthorne and later moved to southern California where both
children are employed, Harriet as a secreatary and Carl with the Standard
Oil company.
Besides the daughter, Mrs. Harriet Howard and son Carl,
Mrs. Knobloch is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nina Straub of San
Jose and Mrs. L.W. Crehore of Fallon and two brothers, Virgil
Willis of California and Jewel Willis of Oregon. A niece,
Mrs. Lucy Dreischmeyer, a close member of the family, who lives
at San Jose, went to Los Angeles for the funeral services.
Mrs. Knobloch was a woman of fine, strong character and endured
with courage her long illness. |
Lucy
(DEAN-STRAUB) DREISCHMEYER was the daughter of Nina
(WILLIS) DEAN STRAUB, my maternal grandmother. Stanford Hospital
is located in Stanford, CA, which is adjacent to Palo Alto, CA, about 30
miles south of San Francisco and 20 miles north of San Jose. I met
Delight just once, at my Grandma Nina's home in San Jose. I suspect
it was around the time of Delight's surgery at Stanford, when I would have
been just under five years old. She was bed-ridden, and I was allowed
to enter the guest bedroom and say hello. All I remember is that
she was very old, very frail, and white-haired. I have no memory
of ever meeting Harriet or Carl, but I heard them spoken of many times
over the years by my mother, Nina
Gale (STRAUB) MATTHIESEN. My mother also graduated from San Jose
High School and San Jose Teachers College, which later became San
Jose State University, from which I graduated. |
