1.  Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 (index plus scanned images of marriage book pages; online at Ancestry.com; abstracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Walter F. DEAN (over age 21) and Nina WILLIS (under age 18; father William WILLIS consenting), both of Hale, Carroll Co., MO, obtained a marriage license on 8 Oct 1897.  They were married in Chillicothe, Livingston Co., MO, by Judge Sol UMPHALBAUGH.

2.  1880 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Fernando DEAN (æ 5, b. MO) is living in Hermann, Wood Twp., Carroll Co., MO, with his parents (q.v.).  Nina WILLIS (æ 9m, b. MO) is living in Chillicothe Twp., Livingston Co., MO, with her parents (q.v.).

3.  1885 Colorado State Census (online at Ancestry.com):  Anita JONES (æ 1, b. CO/MO/IA) is living in Chaffee Co., CO (p. 4), with her parents, Eugene B. JONES (æ 36, b. MO/VA/KY) & Lucy E. (æ 20, b. IA/MA/CT), plus sister.  [Walter not found.]

4.  1890 Census:  the 1890 Census Population Schedules were destroyed.  We know that, in 1889, Nina WILLIS's family was living in Hale, Hurricane Twp., Carroll Co., MO, because her sister was born there that year.

5a.  1900 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  Walter not found, but he should be a law student at the University of Colorado, so he probably wouldn't show up in the census.  Anita JONES (æ 16, b. Sep 1883, CO/Un/IA), is living in Salida City, Chaffee Co., CO (p. 297A), with her widowed mother, Lucy JONES (æ 38, b. Oct 1861, IA/VA/Un), plus sisters.

Both of Ida's parents were born in NY.  Nina was either separated or divorced, not widowed, though she maintained the fiction of widowhood because Lucy Emma grew up believing her father was deceased.  Other records say Lucy Emma was born in 1898, not 1899.

Although their marriage year calculates to 1914/5, Walter was clearly still single when he registered for the draft in 1918 (see below), unless he considered his father his nearest relative, not his wife, but most men name their wife as next of kin.
