William ILIFF
Emily JACOBS
Husband:  William ILIFF
Birth:  8 Apr 1813, Hampshire Co., VA [now WV]
Death:  7 Jul 1858, Hancock Co., OH
Brother:  Joshua ILIFF, b. 9 Aug 1807, VA
Father:  Stephen ILIFF (1759-1835)
Mother:  Hannah BEERS (c1763-18__)
Marriage:  31 Dec 1851, Hancock Co., OH
Wife:  Emily JACOBS
Birth:  14 Oct 1826, VA — either Fauquier Co. or Culpeper Co.
Death:  27 Jul 1898, Huber, Hancock Co., OH
Other Spouse:  m2. 2 Apr 1863, Hancock Co., OH, Reason BUCKINGHAM
Father:  Taliaferro JACOBS
Mother:  Lucretia WALKER
Children — born in Biglick Twp., Hancock Co., OH:
1.  Joshua ILIFF, b. Jun 1852; d.s.p. 1853
2.  Thomas Jefferson ILIFF, b. 2 Oct 1853; d. 21 Dec 1921
3.  James M. ILIFF, b. 20 Dec 1854; d. 13 Jun 1901
4.  Susan ILIFF, b. 16 Dec 1856; d.s.p. 1856
5.  Sarah Ann ILIFF, b. 10 Nov 1858; d. 22 Jan 1894; m. 22 Feb 1876, Hancock Co., OH, , Amos A. BEARD (1843-1902), s/o Adam BEARD (1808-1889), s/o John BEARD (c1770-1829), and thus first cousin of the Sarah Ann BEARD who married Paul STRAUB
Adopted? Child:
.  John T. JACOBS, a.k.a., John ILIFF, b. 1847/8, OH

John is not William ILIFF's son, though William may have adopted him when he married Emily in 1851.  In the 1850 census, John T. JACOBS (æ 3, b. OH) is living with an unmarried Emily and her parents; in the 1860 census, John ILIFF (æ 12, b. OH) is living with the widowed Emily and her widowed mother;  in the 1870 census, John L. JACOBS (æ 22, b. OH) is living with Emily and her second husband, Reason BUCKINGHAM; in the 1880 census, John T. JACOBS (æ 32, b. OH) is living next door to Emily.  John is much too young to be Emily's sibling, so a reasonable deduction is that he is either Emily's orphaned nephew or her illegitimate son.  The fact that, in the 1880 census, John knows his mother's birthplace, but not his father's, strongly supports that he is Emily's illegitimate son.  It's even conceivable that John is a child of rape.  A search in county court records around the time of John's birth might reveal a civil bastardy case or even a criminal prosecution for rape.

Iliff, William Jacobs, Emily 31 Dec 1851 Hancock Co.
This is a very late first marriage for William.  I wonder if he had an earlier wife?

William ILIFF 37 M   Farmer 300 Va
Living alone — no son, John, nor is there a 2/3-yr-old John ILIFF indexed elsewhere in Hancock Co., OH.  William is listed next to his brother, Joshua ILIFF (æ 41, b. VA, wife Eve — no son, John), who is listed two households from Taliaferro & Lucretia JACOBS and their daughter, Emily JACOBS, whom William marries in 1851.

1860 Census Index/Images (online at Genealogy.com, Image #7 of 28 — indexed "Sliff"):  Vanlue P.O., Biglick Twp., Hancock Co., OH, Roll 982 (Book 1), p. 219A, PN 45, 315/305, enumerated 13 Jun 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

John      " 12 M         O
Thomas J  "  6 M         "
James M   "  5 M         "
Sarah Ann "  1 F         "
Lucretia is Emily's mother.  It appears William may have adopted John, though the apparent surname change (from JACOBS to ILIFF) may be enumerator error.

Iliff James 15 M W Labors on farm     Ohio
_____ Sarah A 11 F W       Ohio

John JACOBS may be Emily's nephew — or her illegitimage son.

5.  1880 Census (indexed at FamilySearch.org; page image online at Ancestry.com, Image #7 of 20):  Marion Twp., Hancock Co., OH, Roll T9-1021, p. 423C, PN 7, SD 1, ED 174, enumerated 7/8 Jun 1880, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1880 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

The fact that John knows where his mother was born, but not his father, strongly supports that he is Emily's illegitimate son — along with the fact that he continues to live in close proximity to her.
