Austin GILBERT
Margaret CRAWFORD
Juliette ALGEIER
WARNING:  There are many problems with this family group sheet, problems I have not resolved.  The difficulties concern especially Austin's children with his second wife, Juliette.  The two eldest are surnamed GILBERT as children in 1850, but surnamed HANLEY as teenages in 1860, making it very likely they are adopted, and most likely that they are Juliette's children by a prior marriage to a Mr. HANLEY.  We desperately need Juliette's marriage records to both men and Juliette's 1850 census record showing her with her parents.  Unfortunately, I've so far been unable to find any of these. The inconsistency of birthplaces doesn't help.  The court records of LaGrange Co., IN, could probably resolve the adoption/guardianship issues.  These are not my blood kin, so I will probably not pursue this avenue further, but I welcome additions and corrections.

2a.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #3-4 of 19):  Town[ship] of Springfield (T37N.R11E), LaGrange Co., IN, Roll M432_157, pp. 65A-65B, 861/865, enumerated 16 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Elias Gilbert 41 M     3000 New York
[Elias's wife and children et al.]

Austin Gilbert 33 M   Farmer   Ohio
Elias GILBERT is Austin's brother.  Austin is now a widower, and his son is living with his in-laws (see next source), just four households away.

2b.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #3 of 19):  Town[ship] of Springfield (T37N.R11E), LaGrange Co., IN, Roll M432_157, p. 65A, 857/861, enumerated 16 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Joseph Crawford 54 M   Farmer   Ohio
Rebecca Crawford 44 F       Ohio
[Joseph & Rebecca's children]
Washington Gilbert  1 M       Ohio
Joseph & Rebecca (SMITH) CRAWFORD are Washington's maternal grandparents (Austin's in-laws) — Washington was born in Indiana, not Ohio.

3.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #4 of 20):  Mongoquinong P.O., Springfield Twp., LaGrange Co., IN, Roll M653_274, p. 507, PN 61, 455/448,  enumerated 29 Jul 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Austin Gilbert 43 M   Farmer 6600 800 New York
Julia     " 28 F         Vermont

Joseph    "  7 M         Indiana

Lydeann   "  3 F         Indiana
Leanora   "  2 F         Indiana
Peoba Johns 17 F   Servent     Indiana
Frank Lang 19 M   Farm Laborer     Germany
George is Austin's son from his prior marriage.  Given that Joseph and Charles are surnamed HANLEY in the 1860 census, it appears they are adopted, presumably the children of a prior marriage by Juliette.

5.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #2-3 of 24 — indexed "Austine"):  Mongoquinong P.O., Springfield Twp., LaGrange Co., IN, Roll M593_333, pp. 293B-294A, PN 2-3, 18/18, enumerated 1 Jun 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

It appears Charles and Joseph are Juliette's children from a prior marriage, who chose to adopt their biological father's surname as they grew up.  But where did Seymour come from?  He wasn't with them in 1860, nor can I find any Seymore GILBERT in the 1850 census.  Is he adopted, too?  And Nora should be 12, not 7.  Is Seymour actually Leanora?  I've seen enumerators make errors at least as bad.  The question then is whether the 7-year-old is a mistake or another child (i.e., is there a Lenora and a Nora?).

6.  1880 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #22 of 23):  Springfield Twp., Lagrange Co., IN, Roll T9_290, p. 350D, PN 24, SD 6, ED 16, enumerated 19 Jun 1880, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1880 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Juliette is too old to be Ernest's mother, so where did he come from?  Is he Lenora's illegitimate child?

8.  1900 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #10 of 35 — Austin is indexed as being age "32"):  LaGrange, Bloomfield Twp., LaGrange Co., IN, Roll T623_383, p. 16B, SN 5, SD 12, ED 70, enumerated 7/8 Jun 1900, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1900 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Mary (DAVID) GILBERT is obviously not Austin's daughter because she's Ernest's wife, but Ernest's relationship to Austin is more problematic.  He's too young to be a child of Gilbert's wife; and, as the 1880 census also shows, his relationship to Austin is unclear.  It seems almost certain he was adopted.  Could Ernest be Austin's illegitimate grandson?

Other Sources:

1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  there are two Austin GILBERT's indexed in the 1840 census, one in Virginia and one in Missouri, so it appears neither is our subject.

.  Anon.  Floyd County, Indiana, Index to Marriage Records.  Indiana Works Progress Administration (online at GenealogyLibrary.com):
Austin Gilbert Sabin Martha M May 29 1851 Bk. 3, p. 341
There were only two Austin GILBERTs in the entire 1850 census of Indiana:  our subject and an Austin L. GILBERT (æ 23, b. MA, unmarried) in New Albany, Floyd Co., IN, who apparently is the one who married Martha SABIN in there in 1851.
