Mary is obviously not Austin's daughter because she's Ernest's wife, but Ernest's relationship to Austin is more problematic. He's too young to be a child of Gilbert's wife; and, as the 1880 census also shows, even his relationship to Austin is unclear. He appears to have been adopted.
