Mother:  Margaret ROSS (1778-1860s)

Wife-1:  Ms. __?__

I have no proof that Joseph had an earlier wife, but the age difference between Joseph and Rebecca strongly suggests he did, as does the older girl in the early censuses.

Spouse: Rebecca HESTER

Joseph CRAUFORD
Marriage: 20 Jan 1825, Wayne, Ohio
Spouse: Rebecca SMITH
Source: Marriage Records, 1813-1951. Ohio. Probate Court (Wayne County)
The earlier marriage could be our subject, though there's no other evidence to support it.  In the 1850 census, there is only one other couple (other than our subjects) named Joseph & Rebecca CRAWFORD who are old enough to be the ones married in 1823, and their first child was born in New York indicating they were most likely married in New York.  If our subject isn't the one who married Rebecca HESTER, then this other couple either died or left Ohio before 1850.

2.  1830 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #13 of 14; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1830 OH Wayne Co. Congress Twp. Roll 142 p. 129 Ln. 11 Joseph Crawford 100 010 - 210 010
These data indicate:
No. & Sex  Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 male 4 or under 1825-1830 = Vinney (b. 1827/8)
1 male 20-29 1800-1810 = Joseph (b. 1795/6)
2 females 4 or under 1825-1830 = Margaret (b. ca. 1829)
= Daughter B
1 female 5-9 1820-1825 = Daughter A
1 female 20-29 1800-1810 = Rebecca (b. 1805/6)
Joseph's in the wrong age class, but this is the only Joseph CRAWFORD in Wayne Co., OH (none in Medina Co.).  Given the age difference between Joseph and Rebecca, it's very likely the older girl is from a prior marriage by Joseph.

3.  1840 Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #5-6 of 8; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
1840 OH Medina Co. Homer Twp. Roll 412 pp. 169B-170A Ln. 2 Joseph Crawford 021 000 100 - 102 010 100 0300000
These data indicate:

2 males 5-9 1830-1835 = James (b. 1833/4)
= John (b. 1832/3)
1 male 10-14 1825-1830 = Vinney (b. 1827/8)
1 male 40-49 1790-1800 = Joseph (b. 1795/6)
1 female 4 or under 1835-1840 = Louisa (b. 1837/8
2 females 10-14 1825-1830 = Margaret (b. ca. 1829)
= Daughter B
1 female 20-29 1810-1820 = Daughter A
1 female 40-49 1790-1800 = Rebecca (b. 1805/6)
3 persons employed in agriculture
Rebecca and Daughter A (if that's who it is) are in the wrong age classes.

4.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #3 of 19):  Town[ship] of Springfield (T37N.R11E), LaGrange Co., IN, Roll M432_157, p. 65A, 857/861, enumerated 16 Sep 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Joseph Crawford 54 M   Farmer   Ohio
Rebecca Crawford 44 F       Ohio
Vinney      " 22 M   Farmer   Ohio
John        " 17 M   Farmer   Ohio
James       " 16 M   Farmer   Ohio
Louisa      " 12 F       Ohio
William     "  9 M       Indiana
Washington Gilbert  1 M       Ohio
Rebecca may have shaved some years off her age.  Washington is their grandson, son of their late daughter, Margaret (CRAWFORD) GILBERT; he was born in Indiana, not Ohio.  They are living four households from Washington's widowed father, Austin GILBERT.
