Comment:
It's expected that you would not find blacks enumerated in the census before the Civil War (before the 1870 census), unless they were Free Colored.  We apparently see Edward enumerated in 1860 because he is a mulatto who can pass for white.  There may be another explanation, but I can't think of any.
