There is a Stephen in Surry Co., NC, but the page is torn and his surname is missing. Numerous names are torn away, so there could be a BRISON there, too.

2b. 1840 Census Images (online at Genealogy.com): they have the Grayson Co., VA, page images, but no index. Stephen is not living with his parents.

2c. Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1840 (Broderbund CD-316): Stephen not indexed; presumably he is living and working out. There are no BRISON families in Grayson County, but there are five BRANSCOM families. The only BRISON in all of Virginia is in Fayette County.
