Warning: secondary sources are mixing up our subject's second wife, Mary DOSHBAUGH, with a Mary __?__ who married Joseph ANDREWS. Both women are enumerated in the 1880 censuses, the former in Clark Co., IL, and the latter in Cleveland, OH, so they cannot possibly be the same woman. After the death of our subject, his second wife, Mary (DOSHBAUGH) CROUCH, married, then quickly divorced, John L. ANDREWS, which is how she came to be Mary ANDREWS on her death certificate.

At first glance, William's middle initial does look like "G," but if you check other entries to see how the enumerator wrote the letter, "D," it is possible to read it as D, which it surely should be.

Germany), plus younger siblings all born in OH and indicating immigration between 1831 and 1834.

At the time, "insane" was a blanket term that included old age dementia, alcoholism, retardation, etc., anything that made someone mentally abnormal. Jimmy DEFORD appears to be a brother of William's late wife, Harriet (DEFORD) COUCH.

Note that marry is Divorced and has returned to using William Daniel's surname. Most mother's would do this, if for no other reason than to make life easier for their sons, so they don't have to keep explaining why their mother has a different surname. I have several women friends and kin who are doing this, despite loathing their ex-husbands.

I do find Widow [Sarah] "Sallie" SURFACE (æ 67, b. 1842/3, OH), who appears to be the Informant on Mary's death certifice. Living with Sallie is a Widow Mary Ann SURFACE (æ 80, b. Germany). Both Sallie and Mary Ann are designated, "Aunt," of the head-of-household, George SURFACE (æ 54, b. 1855/6, IN).
