The "E.B." appearing with Elizabeth in the 1880 census and called, "daughter," wouldn't appear to be John's daughter, given that she was born eight or nine years after John and Elizabeth divorced. So, was Effie illegitimate? Or did Elizabeth adopt her?

John and Elizabeth were not married until Feb 1860, so while I'll grant they had the twin girls in May of 1860, I doubt they had a child in 1857, which is supported by the fact that they have no children in the 1860 census. Or did they have an illegitimate child together before they married?

The 1890 Special Census of Union Veterans of the Civil War lists John R. Booker as living in Echo, Bell County, Texas. John R. enlisted into the US Army on July 1, 1861, in Bloomfield, Indiana, with the rank of private. He served in Company C of the 21st Regiment of Indiana Infantry under Captain William Bough. He was discharged in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on July 1, 1864. He reenlisted in the Company C 1st Indiana Artillery and served until December 15, 1866, when he mustered out in Baton Rouge.
According to the pension questionnaire on June 15, 1898, John Ross was born on November 11, 1839, in Carlisle, Indiana. It also states that he was married to Elizabeth Cowden in February 1859 and divorced in the February term of Court, 1864.
