The State of Michigan was formed from Michigan Territory in 1837. The first federal census was taken in 1840, though there were territorial censuses taken as early as 1769. The earliest HOPKINSes in Michigan are the two who appear in 1827, one in Macomb Co. and one in Wayne Co. (see below). The entire 1890 federal census was lost, but there was a state census in 1894. |
