5. Mahantango Twp. was formed in 1787 in Northumberland Co. then was ceded to Union Co. when the latter was formed in 1813. Mahantango Twp. ceased to exist some time before 1820 when it was divided between Perry and Washington Twps., which two townships were then further subdivided into West Perry, Chapman, Union, and bits of Jackson and Monroe Twps. These were among the townships ceded by Union Co. to form Snyder Co. in 1855. In other words, Mahantango Twp. no longer exists, but it once covered most of what is now southern and eastern Snyder Co.
