An Article on "Old Middleburg or Middlebury" by Doris Thompson
Source:   From The Post-Telegraph, Princeton, Mercer Co., MO, 6 Dec 1962 (contributed by Art Daly).  Surnames changed to ALL-CAPS.
Middlebury was the first settlement in Mercer County according to Dr. Willard Ellsworth of Cainsville, an authority on Mercer County History.

When the land office was opened in 1839, land was entered by Gideon BOSLEY, John D. LOCK, Richard WILLIAMS, David A. WILLIAMS, and Royal WILLIAMS of Middlebury.  Benjamin D. THAXTON entered 160 acres of land in 1839.  David WILLIAMS purchased land from THAXTON in 1853.

Abstract records show that Middlebury Lodge 141, A.F. & A.M. [Ancient Free and Accepted Masons], owned property there in 1868 and that it was located between the Union Hotel and the lot owned by Royal WILLIAMS.

The old cemetery is grown up with bramble, weeds and locust saplings.  Many of the old headstones are broken and turned over.  Many are covered with sod and grass.  It is thought to be the oldest cemetery in Mercer County.  A number of graves are marked with headstones showing 1831 as the date of death.  There are many graves with Masonic markers.  Many headstones show that Union soldiers are buried there.

Among the few headstones which are still standing are those of Richard WILLIAMS, 90, who died in 1858, Royal WILLIAMS with a Masonic emblem, Dr. I.D. THOMPSON, 38, who died in 1856.  (This was an older brother of my John Alexander Campbell THOMPSON.  His name was Isaac Davis THOMPSON.)  There are markers for J.M. WILLIAMS, Co. C, 23rd Missouri Infantry and A.C. CARSON, Co. C, 23rd Mo. Inf.
