Our subject may have been named for Gen. Zachary TAYLOR (1784-1850).  TAYLOR's military career began with the War of 1812, but he acquired fame and the nickname, "Old Rough 'n' Ready," in 1838 during the Seminole War.  He became the 12th President of the United States in 1849 and died in office in 1850.  Our subject's nickname, "Ruffin," may be a phonetic spelling variation of "Rough 'n'."
