John THOMPSON
Nancy Ann LEA
NOTICE:  A patrilineal descendant of our subject is participating in the THOMPSON Y-DNA Surname Project.  Anyone who suspects he descends from our subject on a direct male line can support that connection with a DNA test.
Husband:  John THOMPSON
Birth:  7 May 1785, Caswell Co., NC
Death:  1 Nov 1866, Caswell Co., NC
Occupation:  farmer
Military Service:  War of 1812: Pvt., Capt. James HOLDEN's Co., 5th NCI
Y-DNA Haplogroup:  I1
Father:  Mr. THOMPSON
Mother:  Nancy Ann __?__

Some secondary sources give John the middle name, Henry, but I have yet to find a primary record giving him a middle name (or initial).  The middle name may have been acquired by attaching him to the wrong parents because some secondary sources have mistakenly given John these parents:
Father:  John THOMPSON (1755-1842) of Robeson Co., NC, and Sumter Co., AL — said to descend from the THOMPSONs of Dumbarton, SCT
Mother:  Mary STRONG (1767- )
Their son, John Henry THOMPSON (1790s- ), married Mary INGRAM on 9 Nov 1826 in Greene Co. (adjacent to Sumter Co.), AL.  In the 1840 census, this John H. THOMPSON (æ 40-50) is living in Sumter Co., AL, next to four of his brothers (all named in his father's will), so clearly, he is not our subject.

Note that from birth to at least 1860, our subject is living in Caswell Co., NC, which is nowhere near Robeson Co., NC, much less Sumter Co., AL.  Even more importantly, however, two paper descendants of the Dumbarton THOMPSONs have been Y-DNA tested, and they are Haplogroup R1b1 (see T-82 and T-130).  People in different haplogroups cannot have had a common ancestor for thousands of years.

Marriage Bond:  19 Feb 1823, Caswell Co., NC
Wife:  Nancy Ann LEA

Death said to be:  11 Oct 1874, Alamance Co., NC

4a.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #20 of 160):  Caswell Co., NC, Roll M432_623, p. 187B, 199/201, enumerated 16 Aug 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Manerva Harris 28 F B     North Hampton NC
William H  "  4 M B     Virginia
Isabella   "  3 F B     "
John Thompson 66 M   Farmer   Caswell NC
Last household on page.  Was John really living next door to his family (see next source)?  Or is this enumerator error?  If not, is he co-habitating with Manerva.

4b.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #21 of 160):  Caswell Co., NC, Roll M432_623, p. 188A, 200/202, enumerated 16 Aug 1850, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1850 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

Sideny A    "  8 M       "
Manerva A   "  7 F       "

Patience appears to be John's unwed sister.

5.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #37 of 153):  Newtonville P.O., Caswell Co., NC, Roll M653_891, p. 323A/649, PN 37, 295/300, enumerated 28 Jun 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):

S A Thompson 17 M   Farmer     NC
N L Thompson 14 F         NC
Z Thompson 13 M         NC
P Thompson 68 F         NC
Who is "N.L."?  Listed eight households from William THOMPSON (æ 27, b. NC; unmarried, living alone), who is presumably their son.

6.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #12 of 48):  Dan River Twp., Caswell Co., NC, Roll M593_1128, p. 312B, PN 12, 87/87, enumerated 22 Jun 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
Thompson Ann 69 F W Keeping house     N Carolina
________ Patience 80 F W House Keeper     "
________ Bettie 40 F W Teaching school     "
________ Mary 37 F W Without Occupation     "
________ Sarah 27 F W Without occupation     "
________ Franklin 29 M W Farm laborer     "
________ Ruffin 22 M W Farm laborer     "
As the elderly are inclined to do, Ann and Patience appear to have inflated their ages, while Bettie appears to be fibbing about hers, in the other direction, as the middle-aged are inclined to do.  "Ruffin" must be a nickname for Zachariah.  Listed next to James THOMPSON (æ 37, b. NC; wife Jannett), who is presumably Nancy Ann's son.

7.  1880 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #21 of 66):  Tunstall Magisterial Dist., Pittsylvania Co., VA, Roll T9_1385, p. 442A, PN 21, SD 2, ED 178, enumerated 8 Jun 1880, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1880 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):
