4c.  1840 Census Index and Digital Images (online at Ancestry.com; Image #15-16 of 20; extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen).  The index here, like the one on the Broderbund CD, says "Springfield," but nothing is written on the census page itself.  If I back up from image #15, I eventually reach image #1, which says "Union," but Union is written in a different pen and a different hand from the rest of the page, so I'm not 100% confident even it is correct.  Certainly, I see no sign of Springfield written anywhere on this group of pages — and the bottom line is, there's no other reason to believe our widower ever lived anywhere other than Goshen Twp. as an adult.¤•
