George E. SURFACE
Sarah DOSBAUGH
Warning:  our subject is being confused with the George W. SURFACE (29 Dec 1836 - 22 Jun 1904) who was son of David SURFACE & Catharine PRUNER and who married Elizabeth Jane BOWEN and his middle initial is "W," not "H."  In the 1870, 1880, and 1900 Censuses, G.W. SURFACE is in Boone Co., IN, while our subject, G.E. SURFACE, is in Johnson Co., IN, in 1870, 1880, and 1900 (see below).  Clearly, these are two different men.
Husband:  George E. SURFACE
Birth:  19 Jan 1836, Stones Crossing, Johnson Co., IN
Death:  10 Jan 1907, White River Twp., Johnson Co., IN
Occupation:  farmer, blacksmith
Father:  William SURFACE
Mother:  Elizabeth MYERS
Marriage:  23 Mar 1863, Johnson Co., IN
Wife:  Sarah "Sallie" DOSBAUGH / DOSHBAUGH
Birth:  12 Feb 1843, Paris Twp., Stark Co., OH
Death:  10 Jul 1926, White River Twp., Johnson Co., IN
Occupation:  homemaker
Father:  John DOSBAUGH
Mother:  Mary Elizabeth KAUGHMAN
Children born in White River Twp., Johnson Co., IN:
1.  John William "Bill" SURFACE, b. 1864; d. 1942
2.  Mary Elizabeth SURFACE, b. 1 Jan 1866; d. 31 Jul 1931
3.  James Henry SURFACE, b. 17 Mar 1867; d. 2 Jan 1939
4.  Samuel Franklin SURFACE, b. 10 Aug 1868; d. 17 Apr 1931
There's a 15-year gap here.
Is George Edward really their biological son?
5.  George Edward SURFACE, b. 14 Jul 1883; d. 16 Jan 1955; m. 14 Jul 1883, John Co., IN, [Magdalena?] "Lena" TRESSLAR
George's marriage certificate gives his father as George E. SURFACE and his mother as Sarah DAUSBAUGH, though that doesn't rule out an adoption.
Children often weren't told they were adopted, so there's little reason the informant on their death certificate would know.

Likewise Ethel; I don't know what to make of her age (see below), and the census shows her mother born in Indiana, not Ohio.
6.  Ethel M. SURFACE, b. ?, IN

I don't know what the nature of this record is or why it's in with the "marriage" records, but it does give us our subject's middle initial.

2.  1850 U.S. Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  George SURFACE (æ 12, b. IN), is living in White River Twp., Johnson Co., IN, with his parents (q.v.).  Sarah DASHBAUGH (æ 8, b. OH) is living in Johnson Twp., Clark Co., IL, with her parents (q.v.)

I cannot fathom what age Ethel is intended to be.  Also, her mother is shown as born in Indiana, not Ohio.  Is she adopted?

"Mary Ann" is almost certainly Sallie (DOSBAUGH) SURFACE's eldest sister, Mary (DOSBAUGH) CROUCH ANDREWS, who was her only sibling born before their parents emigrated from Germany.  Mary ANDREWS died in West River Township in 1912, and Sallie was the informant on her death certificate.  "Cousin Mary" is Sallie's daughter.
