Foster STRAUB/STRAUP is Ephraim & Elizabeth's grandson-in-law; it's Foster's wife, Susan (PAUL) STRAUB, who is their biological granddaughter. Esther (STRAUB) SHIFFER is apparently Foster STRAUB's sister because, in addition to have the same surname, Esther's daughter, Dorothy SHIFFER, is living with Foster & Susan in the 1920 census where she is called "niece" (see below). It appears Esther being called "granddaughter" is enumerator error, just as Foster's being called "grandson" is enumerator error. We don't know the identity of Foster's and Esther's parents, though we do know their mother's given name was Margaret (see Foster's page for the reason we know). There's no sign that Ephraim & Elizabeth (FETTEROLF) CONRAD had a daughter named, Margaret (see their earlier census records); and, more importantly, their only daughter old enough to be Esther's mother is the Sarah A. CONRAD who married William J. PAUL and is Susan (PAUL) STRAUB's mother (i.e., her marriage is already accounted for).
