It's odd for someone to switch from unskilled labor to a craft like shoemaking late in life.  Was he a craftsman all along?

"John Rose died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Conser, (on Second Street) in Sunbury, Sunday morning at 2.20 o'clock in the a.m. of old age.  He was aged 90 years, 9 months and 20 days.  He was the father of George Rose, the well known engineer on the Sunbury division.  Mr. Rose's remains will be interred in Pomfret Manor Cemetery on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock a.m."
