I entered the service in 1864 at the age of fifteen as a brakeman on the Bellefonte & Snow Shoe, and remained there until 1868, when I became brakeman on the Eastern Division of the Philadelphia & Erie, controlled by the Pennsylvania.  I went to firing in 1869, and was promoted to engineman in 1872 on the Sunbury Division.  I hauled freight until 1877, when I was given a passenger run, and outside of a few changes in the time table I am hauling the same train today...

He went on to describe an incident he experienced.
