John PARKIN
Frances __?__
Sarah __?__
WARNING:  Consider this page tentative.  What I've pieced together from circumstantial evidence is at odds with a file submitted to World Family Trees (see Sources below).  I don't think the WFT pedigree can be correct because it gives one woman (the first wife) as mother of all the children, whose birthdates span 33 years.  The usually span of fecundity for a woman is 23 years, and I've never seen a woman with a span of 33 years.  The WFT pedigree gives Sarah DUNN as the first wife and Sarah LAKE (1822-1865) as the second wife, which may be correct, but Sarah LAKE is obviously the one who died giving birth to Elmer in 1865, so Sarah DUNN cannot have been the mother of all the children.  Obviously, we desperately need John's marriage records, but as both marriages appear to have taken place in NY, we are unlikely to find them.

1840 NY Wayne Co. Town of Arcadia Roll 350 pp. 144A-144B Ln. 13 John Parkins 100 010 - 100 100 0001000
These data indicate:
No. & Sex Age Class Therefore Born Individuals Inferred
1 male 4 or under 1835-1840 = Thomas (b. 1835/6)
1 male 20-29 1810-1820 = John (b. 1812)
1 female 4 or under 1835-1840 = Daughter A
1 female 15-19 1820-1825 = Sarah (b. 1822)
1 person employed in manufacture and trade
How can Sarah be the mother of two children by age 18?  Surely John had an earlier wife.  Also in Arcadia (p. 143A, Ln. 14) is a George PARKIN (200 001 - 100 010), who could be John's older brother.

Elmer is male.  Laura (TURNER) is William's wife.  Althea is female; she's Laura's sister, whose surname should have been TURNER, not PARKIN.  Where are Marietta and Josephine?  I did a page-by-page search of Crawford Twp. and did not find them.  Have other family members taken the young girls in?  Or is this simply enumerator error?  It appears so.

Maude should be listed as a granddaughter, not a daughter — "Relationship" is supposed to be with regard to the head-of-household, and Maude is the daughter of Charles & Isabelle, not of John.  "Parkin" should be Elmer.

This enumerator's handwriting was very difficult to read.  Also, the enumerator was inconsistent with regard to putting first-name first or last-name first, which led to the family being indexed by the LDS as surname LEE (it's PERRINE).  They are listed near Mariette's and Josephine's brother, Nelson PERKINS (æ 15).

9.  Fairville Cemetery, Town of Arcadia, Wayne County, New York (online at the Wayne County NYGenWeb site):
PARKIN Frances, wife of John, Aug. 20, 1838, 24y
She is the only PARKIN in the cemetery, nor are there any PARKINs or PARKINSes in any of the other cemeteries transcribed at the web site.

10.  Dunn Cemetery, Tymochtee Twp., Wyandot Co., OH (online at the Wyandot OHGenWeb site; courtesy of Kristina (Kuhn) Drumm):
Surname Given Name Birth Date Death Date Age at Death Notes
PARKIN John   02/27/1888 75y 9m 20d
PARKIN Sarah   08/10/1865 43y 5m 10d w/o John

11.  Birthdate calculated using Ben Buckner's Birthdate Calculator.
Name Deathdate Age at Death Result
John PARKIN 27 Feb 1888 20d 9m 75y  7 May 1812
Sarah PARKIN 10 Aug 1865 10d 5m 43y 31 Feb 1822
10 Sep 1865 10d 5m 43y 31 Mar 1822
(Calculated birthdates should always be prefaced with "ca." — you can't be certain the person who calculated their age did it correctly.)
February 31 is an impossible date, which means either Sarah's age at death is incorrect or her death date in the online transcription (see prior source) is incorrect.  Given that the 1900 census shows Sarah's son, Elmer, born in September 1865, I think we can assume the error is in Sarah's date of death.

12.  Broderbund.  World Family Trees.  Volume 9, Pedigree No. 2738.  Consistently uses "PARKINS."  Says John had two wives:  Sarah LAKE and Sarah DUNN.  Says Sarah LAKE was born 10 Mar 1822 in NY and died 10 Aug 1865 in Wyandot Co., OH.  Says Sarah DUNN was the mother of all the children, which cannot be because the Sarah who died in Sep 1865 was obviously the mother of Elmer, born Sep 1865, and apparently died in child birth (or soon after).
