Mr. LYON
Nancy A. THORP
Partner:  Mr. LYON — or an INGHAM with a LYON NPE

A patrilineal line male descendant of Nancy's illegitimate son, William H. THORP, has been Y-DNA tested.  He is Haplogroup R1b-DF5 and has a 110/111 STR match with the modal haplotype of the Haplogroup R1b-DF5 Middlesex LYON(S).  Statistically, he has a 100% probability of being genetically connected to this family within genealogical time (15 generations), a 98.99% probability of being connected within eight generations, and a 78.35% probability of being connected within four generations, the THORPE testee's distance from our unknown subject.  If our unknown subject is an INGHAM, he is an INGHAM with a LYON NPE.
Liaison:  ca. May 1869
Partner:  Nancy A. THORP
Birth:  1848/9, OH
Death apparently:  1892-1900, Cattaraugus Co., NY
Spouse:  m. 1875-80, James DANIELS
Father:  Willis THORP
Mother:  Eunice __?__

Throughout most of her adult life, Nancy appears to have been fibbing about her age — as many women do.  Her most accurate ages are probably those in her childhood, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  Certainly, she was born by 1850 — she's in the 1850 census — so any younger ages cannot be correct.
Child — born in NY:
1.  William H. THORP, a.k.a., William H. DANIELS, a.k.a., William H. INGHAM, a.k.a., Herikimer INGHAM, b. 11 Feb 1870

•  It's possible, even probable, that William's father was an INGHAM.  If so, it would have to be an INGHAM who has an NPE in his patrilineal line.  In other words, we are now looking for an INGHAM who is really a LYON.  If one such INGHAM is ever Y-DNA tested, he will immediately show up as another tight genetic match with the Middlesex LYONs.
•  Descendants say his middle name was known in the family as, "Henry"; however, I can find no records with that middle name.  In contrast, we do have a record indicating his middle name was Herkimer, at least as a child.  It may be that he deliberately — and understandably — changed it to Henry as an adult.

Nancy should be age 21.  Given that Nancy's child is surnamed, INGHAM, in the next census, I'm inclinded to believe the enumerator has switched his surname and given name in this census.  Enumerators certainly do make mistakes as bad as this one, and this enumerator was definetely sloppy, with barely decipherable handwriting.
