The 1850 Census has Mabel, Jacob, and Thomas born in VT, but Charles born in NY. I suspect "NY" is census-taker error, but if Charles really was born in NY, then he may not be Ezra's son. On the other hand, Chittenden Co. is just across the Hudson River from New York state, so he could easily have been born there when his mother was on a visit.

The record shows a couple with no small children, which is consistent with them being newlyweds. Ezra is not old enough to have fathered the younger girl, so despite his being 30 yrs of age, the younger woman must be his bride. There are any number of scenarios to explain the second woman, though it is not likely Mabel's mother, for both her parents are alive. Both of Ezra's biological parents have passed away, but the older woman could conceivably be his step-mother. But as I said, many scenarios could fit the data. Numerical data from later censuses should clarify which woman is Mabel. Also in Chittenden Co.: Ezra's brother, Daniel GALUSHA.

The index says "Downers Grove," and that is what it says at the top of the census page, but midway down the page, the census-taker enters "Town of Winfield." They are listed next to Jacob's sister, Mabel (GALUSHA) HERRICK.
