2.  1850 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  can't find.  John FIELDS (æ 60, b. NC) and his wife, Celia (æ 50, b. NC), are living in Chatham Co., NC (p. 368A), with three of their children, but not Alvis.

3.  1860 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #59 of 84):  Pittsboro P.O., Middle Division, Chatham Co., NC, Roll M653_892, p. 106A/211, PN 59, 488/441, enumerated 12 Jul 1860, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):-

Nancy   " 10 F         "
John A  "  5 M         "
Listed two households from John FIELDS (æ 70, b. NC) and his wife, Celia (æ 60, b. NC), who are very likely Alvis's parents.

4.  1870 Census Every-Name-Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com, Image #30 of 45):  Grove P.O., Gulf Twp., Chatham Co., NC, Roll M593_1129, p. 77B, PN 31, 241/241, enumerated 29 Aug 1870, official enumeration date 1 Jun 1870 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):-

Everyone from "Clora" on down is surnamed BEAL, not FIELDS, much less HIELDS.  Susan's relationship is unreadable, but the child is presumably hers. Chloe (MORAN) BEAL is Julia Ann's mother.  Phoebe (DOWDY) BEAL is Julia Ann's sister-in-law, widow of her brother, William; the children listed below Phoebe are her own.  Phoebe is not Chloe's daughter, but her daughter-in-law.  This enumerator's handwriting was unbelieveably sloppy, not to mention his gross errors.
