Gilbert DILLARD
Mary E. __?__ Myrtle CORBIN Belle M. __?__ Jessie E. __?__ |
Please Note: I'm convinced that the difficulties encountered interpreting this family lie in the fact that the 1900 census enumerator grossly erred. Whether he didn't know how to handle the situation (of a man with a prior wife and children), or whether Gill and/or Myrtle simply decided to uncomplicate things by giving false information, we'll never know. Our subject did "have a past" — a conviction for manslaughter and a stay in prison (ca. 1890-94) while married to Mary — so he may have wanted to distance himself from that past. On the other hand, if it was the enumerator's practice to handle a prior wife and children this way (i.e., as if there'd only been one wife), all the census records of the Chickasaw Nation in 1900 enumerated by him need to be viewed with this possibility in mind. |
