Comments:

In the 1850 Census, "Jacob" (æ 12, b. OH), is living with our subjects, Paul & Susanna (STRAUB) CRAWFORD.  There is also a child of that age and gender living with our subjects in the 1840 Census.  But unless someone has further documentation of a connection, I'm not entirely convinced that the Jacob CRAWFORD (æ 22, b. OH) in the 1860 census of Brown Co., IL — as linked above — is the son of our subjects, as is given by secondary sources.  If he were their son, he would be the only one of their children who left Fayette Co.

The Jacob CRAWFORD in the 1860 census of Brown Co., IL, is an unmarried farmer living in the household of Benjamin BOND, farmer, and his family.  This Jacob has $300 of his own — a goodly sum for a man so young — which suggest he has, at age 21, possibly come into an inheritance.  Between 1860 and 1870, this Jacob takes two wives, in succession, then continues to appear in the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Brown Co.  This Jacob's age, birthplace, and financial circumstances agree with him being the son of Paul & Susanna (STRAUB) CRAWFORD.  So… what's the problem?  The problem is Jordan CRAWFORD.

In the 1850 Census, Susanna (STRAUB) CRAWFORD appears as a widow, but she is not head-of-household.  The head-of-household is one Jordan CRAWFORD (æ 26, b. OH), an unmarried farmer.  Living with Jordan and Susanna are two of Susanna's children and two of her orphaned grandchildren.  In every similar circumstance I have encountered to this point, the correct reading of this census record would be that Jordan is the eldest son of a widowed Susanna.  Yet, where was Jordan in 1840 and 1850?  No child of the corresponding name and age occurs with Susanna in the 1850 Census, and no child of the corresponding gender and age is included in Paul & Susanna's household in the 1840 census.  So who is Jordan?  He pops up just this once, then disappears, though the latter is easy to explain.  As of the 1860 Census, we were on the verge of the most devastating war in U.S. history, and Jordan was prime age to be a soldier — and get killed.

What I'm wondering is whether census-taker error has obscurred the fact that Jacob, age 12 in 1850, is really the same person as Jordan, age 26 in 1860.  I've seen census-takers make worse errors.  If so, and if Jacob/Jordan died in the Civil War, unmarried and without issue, there are no descendants to make this question a matter of great concern.  It is, of course, a matter of great concern to descendants of the Jacob CRAWFORD in Brown Co., IL, whether Paul & Susanna (STRAUB) CRAWFORD really are, or are not, his parents.  If the Brown Co. Jacob is Paul & Susanna's son, then I'm left wondering, who is Jordan CRAWFORD?!

2 males 20-29 1800-1810 = Paul (b. 1809)

2 females 4 or under 1825-1830 = Barbara (b. 1829)

1 female 15-19 1810-1815 = sibling?
1 female 20-29 1800-1810 = Susanna (b. 1808/9)
The extra young adults could account for the older children missing from Paul's father's household; that is, they're Paul's siblings.  Also in Richland Twp.:  Susanna's brother, Joseph STRAUB

Paul is in the wrong age-class, but I see no reason to doubt these are our subjects.  Listed seven lines below Conrad CUPP, who is listed one line below Peter DUNKLEBERGER

Where is Jordan?  He should be 16.  Andrew's age had been written "29," then the "2" was rubbed out and replaced with a "1" — at least, that's what appears to have happened.

5.  1860 Census Images (online at Genealogy.com; Image #16 of 16 — Susanna was not indexed, only Jordan):  Hickory Creek P.O., Cumberland [now Otego] Twp., Fayette Co., IL, Roll 177 (Book 1), p. 74, PN 74, 488/499, enumerated 29 Jun 1860 (extracted by Diana Gale Matthiesen):¤•

Who is Jordan?!  One would expect he is Susanna's son, but he does not appear in the 1840 or 1850 census with Susanna's family.  David and Talitha are Susanna's grandchildren, through her deceased daughter, Mary Ann (CRAWFORD) SCHRODT

Fayette Facts (Fayette County Genealogical & Historical Society, Vandalia, IL), v. 8, n. 2, pp. 56-57.  Says Susanna is buried in an unmarked grave in the Pilcher Cemetery.  Be aware that the ancestry of Susanna STRAUB as given in the article is incorrect:  she was not descended from Andrew and Mary Eveline (WALTER) STRAUB of Milton, PA.  The article contains other substantial errors, so confirm, confirm, confirm!
