*In the 1820 Census, the third column is age class 16-18 and the fourth column is age class 16-25, which means any individual in column three is duplicated in column four.  So, for an accurate representation of the household, the number in column three should be subtracted from the number in column four. If, after the subtraction, any individuals remain in column four, then they have to be age 19-25, thus creating a "new," more precise age class.
There are 22 BROWN households in Newburyport.  This household is the only Eliphalet BROWN in MA.

Were they running an inn or something?  Eunice (PILSBURY) TAPPAN's husband died in 1821, so it's reasonable for her and her children to be boarding somewhere, but why with Eliphalet & Polly?  Are they kin?  There are four Eliphalet BROWNs in MA, three in their 30s, plus our subject tallied as being in his 50s, though he should be in his 60s.

1840 U.S. Census Index/Images (online at Ancestry.com):  There are two Eliphalet BROWNs in MA, one in Lowell and one in Boston, so it appears to me Eliphalet of Newburyport is deceased.  There are four "Mrs. BROWNs" in Newburyport, one in her 40s, two in their 60s, and one in her 70s.  Polly should be in her 60s, but it's really not obvious that she is one of the two.
