J. Nelson ALTMAN
Elizabeth PULASKI
WARNING:  The census records for this family do not jibe well with each other.  Consider the page tentative.
Husband:  J. Nelson ALTMAN
Birth:  28 Mar 1829, Beaufort Dist. [now Hampton Co.], SC
Death:  13 Jul 1895, Hampton Co., SC
Disposition:  buried Hopewell Cemetery
Occupation:  farmer
Father:  John ALTMAN (c1770s-1860s)
Mother:  Nancy DELOACH (c1780s-1838)
Marriage:
Wife:  Elizabeth PULASKI
Birth:  1 Apr 1826
Death:  29 Jun 1902, Hampton Co., SC
Disposition:  buried Hopewell Cemetery
Father probably:  Thomas PULASKI, b. 1798/9, SC
Mother probably:  Priscilla __?__, b. ca. 1802, SC
Children — born in Beaufort Dist. [now Hampton Co.], SC:
1.  Sarah Susan ALTMAN, b. 12 Jul 1851; d. 6 Jun 1894
2.  Martha M. ALTMAN, b. 1854
3.  Elizabeth Jane ALTMAN, b. 15 Apr 1855; d. 17 Sep 1902
4.  Nancy Ann ALTMAN, b. 28 Feb 1857; d. 17 Sep 1898

Said to have had this child, who does show up with our subjects in the 1870 census, but not in the 1860 census:
5.  Samuel ALTMAN, b. 1857/8
Orphans abounded after the Civil War.  Is it not likely he is a nephew?

Said to have had these children, who do show up with our subjects in the 1880 census, but not in the 1870 census:
6.  James Phillip ALTMAN, b. 9 Nov 1865; d. 31 Mar 1928
7.  William Edward ALTMAN, b. 23 Nov 1867; d. 4 Aug 1935

Others:
Said to have had these children, and they do show up in the 1900 census, but neither shows up with our subjects in the 1870 or 1880 censuses:
.  Henry M. ALTMAN, b. Jan 1870
.  Emma D. ALTMAN, b. Oct 1872
In the 1900 census, Elizabeth indicates she had only seven children, further adding doubt that these are her children.  In fact, it appears to me that Emma is James Phillip's wife and that Henry is her brother, meaning ALMAN is not their surname.

Listed next to Thomas PULASKIE (æ 52, b. SC) and his wife, Priscilla (æ 48, b. SC), who are very likely Elizabeth's parents.

Martha's middle initial is definitely, "M."  Listed next to Thomas PULASKI (æ 61, b. SC) and his wife, Priscilla (æ 55, b. SC), who are very likely Elizabeth's parents.

Every one's age has been kick down a year or more, and Samuel appears for the first time.  He was not with them in the 1860 census, so he should be younger than Nancy.  Is his age to high or is he really their son?  And where are James Phillip and William Edward?  Listed five households from Widow Amanda CORBIN, whose son is living with them in 1880 (see next Source).

James Phillip and William Edward were not with them in the 1770 census, so are they really our subjects' sons?

The enumerator has totally bollixed this record.  Elizabeth mary or may not be James's mother, but Emma is his wife, not his sister, and Henry has to be Emma's brother, not James's (see James's page for his 1910 census records, which confirms this interpretation).  Listed next to Eddie ALTMAN (b. Nov 1868, SC).
