Iowa did not achieve statehood until 1846, but Iowa Territory
was formed in 1838, and there was a Territorial Census in 1840.
None of the indices to the 1840 Iowa Territorial census available to me includes page numbers, so once I knew the name and the county, I had to search page-by-page for the actual record. There were numerous indexed names that may be mis-readings of STRAUB/etc., but until we get an index with page numbers, I can't take the time to check all of them. |

Footnotes:
1. George is indexed as both STROPES and STROSSES, and I'm not certain I can tell the difference, either, but if I had to chose, I'd say it's STROSSES. 2. The Daniel M. SHUPE indexed in Des Moines is SHUPE. 3. Finished search at Ancestry.com on STR*, SHA*, SHO*, SHU*. |

There are more details at GenealogyLibrary.com (1838, 1840, and 1849
censuses) that should be checked. The problem with these records
is that there's no hope of seeing the original.
