| John CORBIN
Elizabeth ELLIOTT |
| Husband: John CORBIN
Birth: ca. 1646 |
| Many show our subject's parents as
Father: Henry CORBIN (1629-1675) Mother: Alice ELTONHEAD (c1627-1685) but our subject is simply too old to be Henry's son, not to mention that Henry & Alice weren't married until after the death of her first husband in 1655/6. Even if we postulate a prior marriage for Henry, for which there is no evidence, he could not have married early enough to be our subject's father. John could easily have been born earlier than 1646, but he couldn't have been born much later and still be the father of a child born in 1671. There is the possibility that our subject is Alice's son, John BURNHAM (b. ca. 1646), from her prior marriage to Capt. Rowland BURNHAM, thus making him Henry's stepson, John BURNHAM-CORBIN. DNA testing could resolve the issue. |
| UPDATE: I've found a source that saying this John arrived in King Georges Co., VA, in 1652 on the ship, Peter. On the ship was a George ELLIOTT who apparently died on the crossing and left property to Elizabeth CORBIN, wife of John. This appears to be the source of the identity of John's wife, though it's unclear whether Elizabeth was George's sister or his daughter. If this is the same couple, as it appears to be, our subject is much too old to be Henry CORBIN's son, or even stepson, and is actually his contemporary. It also means the children attributed to them are dubious because a woman who is adult in 1652 cannot still be birthing children in 1687. |
